Do you have privacy on the Internet? If so how, if not why not? What about when an
employee is using a company computer and network, should they expect privacy?
In a recent study conducted by Pew Research Center, Americans are so concerned about
the privacy of their personal data (Rainie, 2016). Despite this, personal privacy on the internet
has over the years waned largely due to the ability of companies being able to collect and track
users online. According to Martin (2016), internet privacy is the ability to perform and transact
personal activity online without being tracked by other parties or personal information being
collected and stored without consent. However, over the years, companies have perfected the art
of collecting and storing personal information without the consent of the user for purposes of
advertising. Other than storing personal information, these companies also track the location of
users online.
Other than tracking the location of the user and collecting personal information for
purposes of advertisements, the use of social media has led personal information being exposed
to other internet users without their consent. Social media platforms such as Facebook and
Twitter have over the recent years exposed personal information such as name, location, and
profile picture of the user without the option of changing this (Martin, 2016). This has led to the
loss of privacy over the internet. As such, the increased use of internet has left us with no privacy
over the internet irrespective of the platform we use. The loss of privacy over the internet
increases when an employee uses a company computer and network to access the internet. This
is because the company is able to track personal information and sites accessed when using such
network.
