Description

Topic: Hypertonic

You are required to submit a medical research paper on a topic of your choice. You will submit your paper through the Turnitin link which can be accessed here or through the module.

Your paper is to be in MLA format. It is to be no less than 5 and no more than 10 double-spaced pages. You are to use medical information and terminology correctly throughout. Your paper will have 1” margins and an easy to read font (ie, Times New Roman, Tahoma) as well as a standard size (12 points). Make sure that you proofread for any spelling or grammatical errors.

A title page is not necessary, instead place your name and other pertinent information flush to the left margin, one inch from the top of the first page. You do not need to include an abstract of your subject in your paper. Simply include an introduction, discussion and conclusion to your research subject.

You are to have at least three references (using at least one hard bound text). Include references in proper MLA format.

Hypertonic
Water plays a vital role in the body. It is essential in helping sustain the normal body
functions ranging from metabolic roles, physiological and even anatomical roles. Some of its
most important roles include transport of nutrients, gases and waste products, thermoregulation,
osmoregulation and pH regulation. The body adjusts to keep a balance between the water and
electrolytes hence helping maintain homeostasis. Water intake in the body is regulated by the
brain, specifically the osmoreceptors in the hypothalamus. This mechanism is stimulated by the
plasma concentration of the blood as it flows through the brain. Increased osmotic pressure will
stimulate the thirst centers hence triggering one to drink water. It will also stimulate the
hypothalamus to secrete hormones which will act on the kidney tubules hence increasing their
permeability to water, causing them to reabsorb water that would have been lost through urine.
The fluids in the body are found in two major compartments. The first one is the
intracellular fluid section which is made up of all the fluids inside the cells. The extracellular
fluid compartment is made up of all the fluids outside the cells. It can further be divided into the
intravascular fluid which occurs in blood vessels and interstitial fluid in tissues spaces.
In this paper, I will talk about a water-electrolyte imbalance due to high solute
concentration in the body. In simple terms, a hypertonic solution can be described as a solution

that contains more dissolved particles and electrolytes than is normal. In the body, this
hypertonic solutions causes unequal osmotic gradient between the inside and the outside of the
cell due to high solute concentration. A solution can be said to be hypertonic if it has an
osmolality of 37mOsm/L. the high osmotic gradient will cause water to move out of the
intracellular space in...
