Maha Saeed ENG 308 April 12th, 2018 Professor Hatim Racializing Islam I am looking forward to discuss all the stereotypes that is often made about Muslims specifically in Saudi Arabia and the widespread stigma made about the women as being controlled and the men as terrorist and extreme religious fanatics. Saudi Arabia has strict Sharia Laws that the government follows, however, this should not be mistaken or accused of being barbaric or supporting violence. But time and time again we are proved by many movies, media news, and so on that the main focus of Muslims is to be violent and are extreme religious people who will stop at nothing. That the Middle East is against all forms of Westernization and portrayed as dessert backward people. In the movie, The Kingdom that was taken place in 2006 at the capital city of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia shows evidence of many terrorist actions and plans that the West likes to believe it to be true. Therefore, I will be analyzing this film in my research and support my ideas with sources that discuss this topic and can relate to the overall image of Saudi Arabia as an Islamic jihadist ideology and how this film gives a bad reputation for Muslims globally and racializes Islam with the support of media propaganda. My overall question for my topic will be; Why does the West racialize Islam, specifically with Saudi Arabia as their main focus to be the most radical of all the Middle East? I will also be using the readings from class to support my ideas about racializing Islam. I believe this project is important and its one of my concerns as an Arab Muslim American to speak against such misconceptions in hopes to clarify this sensitive issue of racializing Islam based on personal fear, ignorance, and general stereotypes made by others. Sources: The Kingdom movie will be purchased online Al-Rashed, Abdulrahman. “Saudi Arabia's Big Debate on Cinema, Concerts.” Arab News, 15 Jan. 2017, www.arabnews.com/node/1039556/columns. Great evidence for being anti-terror country: “Al-Asheikh has always opposed extremism and terrorism in the name of Islam. He made courageous stands against dangerous organizations like Al-Qaeda, which enjoyed the support of some others. Due to his anti-extremist approach, the grand mufti has been discredited by terrorists who put him on their target list. He also opposes the Iranian regime, which adopts political violence (Al-Rashed).” AlSultany ‘Challenging the Terrorist Stereotype’ in Arabs and Muslims in the Media: Race and Representation after 9/11 (18-46). This is another great source it will help me find many information about Saudi Arabia. It is owned by the royal Saudi family, Faisal bin Salman. “Saudi Arabia News.” Top Stories from Al Jazeera, www.aljazeera.com/topics/country/saudiarabia.html. This paper identifies a (number of) important themes related to our class, and clear object of analysis. The problem that it runs into is that the research questions that it asks are very general, and even seem to involve problematic overgeneralization about 'the West' and 'Islam', ideas that even the sources you cite would suggest are internally diverse phenomena, made to seem coherent by a series of convenient fictions. You will need to reframe your research questions to be about the film more specifically. For example, you might ask 'How does The Kingdom construct a viewer assumed to be an 'outsider/western' perspective?' or 'How does the film explain the 'cause' of terrorism?' and 'How are ideas about good and evil informed by ideas about race in this film?' You will also need to put the film in a historical context. Sources -You have included a number of news reports - these are not appropriate sources. -All of the academic sources you cite are from the syllabus, and even those don't depart from the specific chapters selected from the books mentioned. This is a red flag at this stage - you must go much further in your literature review to find appropriate sources, and there has been a large amount written on this topic. You should first read the AlSultany book in greater depth. I then suggest you look at the sources she cites, as well as academic sources that cite this book.
