Question description

Each student must write a brief essay (3-5 pages double spaced) that evaluates the #MeToo Movement using a global perspective and draft a resolution to the UN as outlined below. Each question is worth 3 points. One point will be given to mechanics and citation. Be sure to apply relevant sociological concepts in your answers.

Your essay should address the following questions:

1. Is this an example of a global social movement?
Why or Why not?

Pay particular attention to:
- social contexts in which the movement has received support (what do these
have in common, how are they different?)

- social location; the voices we hear AND importantly, the voices we don't hear;
who benefits from these discussions, whose concerns are represented, whose
concerns are not?

2. Do you think the movement will have the power to make a difference in the world?
Use examples to explain why or why not. Be specific about claims and grievances

as they relate to movement goals and success.

3. Provide three suggestions to the [#MeTooorganizers/United Nations Women] who

hope to spark a global social movement?

The Context:

From its inception in 2007, the #MeToo movement (with its founder Tarana Burke),hassought to promote justice for women and girls who were survivors of sexual abuse and assault. After the events in late 2017, and the tremendous response to #MeToo(particularly in western nations like the US), there is an emerging effort underway in the United Nations to transform the #MeToo moment into a global movement.

United Nations (UN) Women

You have been assigned the Contemporary Social Movements and Profound Change (CSMPC) sub-committee under the supervision of United Nations (UN) Women. UN Women wants to harness the spirit, as well as empower the grassroots networks and organization that have taken up the call for meaningful social change around issues affecting the lives of women and girls the world over.

Your Task

You are tasked with the job of globalizing #MeToo. You will need to prepare a briefdraft document for a UN Resolution. This resolution will be brought before the General Assembly by UN Women. The goal of the draft resolution will be to capitalize on the momentum of #MeToo movement.

1. Your resolution should consider the experiences and circumstances of women and girls from all over the world. Make sure that your draft resolution connects with different groups in our global community. Although the #MeToo movement began in the United States, UN Women want their resolution to speak to social justice issues for all women, in all parts of the world (globalizing #MeToo).

2. Do you think the movement will have the power to make a difference in the world? Use examples to explain why or why not. Be specific about claims and grievances as they relate to movement goals and success.

3. Propose at least three realistic ways to broaden appeal of the #MeToomovement through media campaign, focusing on:

i) the movements reach (the global awareness of the movement and the

importance of the issues it is taking up);

ii) the relevance (the extent to which individual, groups, and communities in

various parts of the world see those issues as important to their everyday

Globalization of Me Too Movement

Globalization of Me Too Movement
The "Me Too Movement" is a global movement intended to fight for the rights of men and
women against the effects caused by sexual assault and harassment. The movement gained
prominence in the year 2017 as a hashtag utilized on social networks to assist in showcasing the
widespread occurrence of sexual harassment and assault on people at their places of work. This
was soon accompanied by the open revelation of sexual misdemeanor allegations against Harvey
Weinstein. The phrase ‘Me Too” was a made a global tweet by Alyssa Milano who was a
proponent with the intention of encouraging women to openly talk about sexual molestation in
order for the world to understand the magnitude of the issue affecting the society today (Chuck,
Elizabeth ( 2017). This paper shall evaluate the Me Too Movement from a global perspective
while outlining why it is a global movement in terms of social contexts and location. The paper
will discuss the possible impact of the goals and objectives of the Me Too Movement to the
world if it is well received by masses across the globe. Lastly, the write-up shall provide
suggestions to the proponents of Me Too Movement on how they may spark the world with Me
Too Movement as the global social movement. The conclusion includes a draft resolution to the
UN discussing the experiences and situations of girls and women across the globe, personal
opinions on the effect the Movement may have to the world as well as a proposal of ways in
which the Me Too Movement maybe improved to appeal to masses across the globe through use
of media campaigns.
According to feminism theory, the global society has unequal power relations between
the female gender and their male counterparts. This has resulted in girls and women being at a
disadvantage and therefore vulnerable to both sexual assaults and molestation (London Feminist
Network). Therefore, this calls for a balance of rights across the world in order for all genders to

have an equal voice society. The Me Too Movement is a global social movement with the
intention of equalizing such powers. This is because a social movement is always triggered by
something that shocks the system. This common aspect of social movements gives the Me Too
Movement a social movement definition since the case of Weinstein and its allegations acted as
the shock to the system that spread over regions through the use of media. Another common
aspect based on the social context of a social movement is that there is always a medium through
which masses are reached with the social movement message. According to the case study, the
Me Too Movement spread quickly due to the potency of social media being utilized in modern
society that has enabled people to easily identify with social movements. The Me Too Movement
has received massive support from the female gender compared to the male counterparts since it
is directed towards fighting for the rights of the women (Smartt, Nicole(2018). On the other
hand, men too have partially embraced the movement due to widespread popularity. Even though
the Weinstein allegation received massive audience as the spark for the Me Too Movement,
other schools of thought believe that this movement might be a result of gradual unfolding over
the years. Therefore not every person would believe the goals and objectives of the movement
since it is something that has lived in society since time immemorial. It is open that it has taken a
good number of years for people to understand that that various forces within our society have
played a key role in subjugating the female gender. The existence of social power gives the male
gender the opportunity to sexually harass the female gender since most positions of power are
held by the male gender that is always aggressive, manipulative ...
