Screening is one of the most vital assessment tools used in the psychological process. It
is a crucial stage that collects significant data from the patient. Screening is a procedure via
which a medical practitioner gathers some brief data about their patient. The information
obtained is only minimal, and it is useful for indicating whether a specific condition of a client
warrants further investigation (SAMHSA, 2013). Therefore, screening is conducted through a
formal interview or testing process. In the interview, the medical professional asks questions
about the patient's life that helps in determining whether the answers provided can be an
indication of an underlying issue. For example, in drug screening, the practitioner may ask the
patient about any questions relating to substance abuse and the frequency. For instance, a client
may be asked if they have ever consumed drugs and the number of times they have done it.
Additionally, a test may be administered, whose results can be compared to a particular scale
used for the specific analysis (SAMHSA, 2013). Therefore, the screening is used to collect brief
information and not to diagnose.
