Law Enforcement
Law enforcement refers to the department of people who enforce laws, investigate crimes, and
make arrests. There are various types of law enforcement that include:
A. Police Training
Police training increases the likelihood of being able to resolve conflicts, allowing the police to
work with confidence and prevent them and their counterparts from being prosecuted for the
actions they undertake. According to Bureau of statistics, the average time required to complete
police training is 21 weeks or 840 hours as of the year 2003. Police trainees receive the full
initial salary during training at the police academy. Successful completion of the police training
course that lasts for six-month's guarantees trainees a permanent position in a police department
and a salary raise. Depending on the police department one will work in, the salary will be more
than $2,000 or $3,000 compared to what one earned during training. The average cost of law
enforcement training is approximately US$6,700, including tuition and ammunition. The training
of police officers is of great value to police officers for their lifetime careers.
After attending the police academy, recruits who participate in the course are also
subjected to practice/ exercises in various related aspects of the police job. They learn state law,
criminal investigations, patrolling procedures, firearms training, and traffic control, driving
defense vehicles, first aid and personal defense and computer skills. Training helps to increase
law enforcement's trust in the community. Law enforcement officers must often make decisions
in a short period of time, and such decisions should be consistent with the legal department's
legal parameters, judicial precedents, and other rules whose default may result into consequences
that may be catastrophic. The result may be civil suits against police officers, their superiors and

agencies or emergence of criminal charges or administrative allegations directed towards the
whole police department. To deal with these threats, law enforcement officers must understand
and be able to apply the law correctly in high-risk situations. However, this can only be achieved
by training in order for the police to gain a balance between the laws of all sectors and the
constitutional rights of citizens they protect and serve while protecting the integrity of the
department.
Training has ensured police officers are currently moral than their predecessors. This is
due to the legal framework established to regulate their mutual conduct that has ensured police
officers are better trained. The importance of having a trained police unit lies in the ability to
write better reports, improve communication with the public, results for effective work as well as
good knowledge of basic laws and public relation. This leads to reduced number of citizens’
complaints, proper use of discretion, officers who are sensitive to racial and ethnic issues and
fewer disciplinary actions towards the officers in case of a misconduct.

B. Police Patrol Strategies
Law enforcement agencies apply various strategies and methodologies to fight crime and
ensure public safety. Surveillance strategies go beyond traditional response models to
respond to distress calls and often seek to increase the effectiveness of prevention,
intervention, and response through technologies such as the use of criminal mapping
techniques, crime data collection or suspicious location identification. These strategies
include:
1. Preventive Patrol Strategy
This is a strategy applied by the police to try to achieve certain specific goals such as
deterring crimes from being committed, foiling crime plans and sending policemen to crime
scenes. Committed officials may choose to walk the crime scene or use patrols cars in
performing their duties. This strategy offers the following benefits:
Due to the constant emergence of police personnel, the security of neighboring counties has
been improved by ensuring the peaceful coexistence of all people in the society. It eliminates
the possibility of misconduct and criminal activity, thereby minimizing the number of
possible gangs or drug traffickers. This ensures that criminals are arrested and supervised to
ensure justice. The disadvantage of this technique is that it takes a long time to respond to
real and ongoing criminal activities.
2. Routine Incident Patrols
This patrol technique includes the police's response to daily events that may not be related to
malicious intentions, such as minor traffic accidents. The main intention is to restore order

and collect information about the incident that is later on documented or it is applied where it
is required to provide immediate services to interested parties.
3. Emergency response
In emergencies, the time is taken to rescue hostages, terrorism victims or the pursuit of
fugitives is of utmost importance. Larger police departments use the SWAT team to handle
major emergencies. If the police department has responded to the emergency situation,
emergency response measures are applicable.

4. Criminal Investigation
This is a process of unearthing, collecting, preparing and identification of facts relative to a
certain crime. The first interviewees at the scene are usually rescue workers and callers who
provide help to those in need. The person conducting the examination is a detective. The
evidence collected is used to successfully track suspects. Only a small part of the police work is
the investigation. In murder and other incidents, the police supervise the investigation of the
incident. The investigations are based on forensic examinations such as DNA where the
investigation team (CSI) collects physical evidence at the incident site. Using this information,
detectives try remaking the situation of what happened through forensic techniques such as DNA
analysis and ballistics in order to solve the crime puzzle and nab the suspects.
5. Problem Solving
A good thing in problem-solving applicable by the police is that it involves the use of SARA
methodology. The SARA methodology stands for Scanning, Analysis, Responding, and
Assessing Results. The SARA model is a common method used by the police to identify and
resolve repeated crimes and social problems.
