Learners who have a growth mindset embrace new challenges and perceive their setbacks as learning opportunities. Such students believe that intelligence is not fixed and can change. It is through their failures and setbacks that they learn and grow. Faith in success enables students to develop a growth mindset and take their failures as the driving motives to learn and grow. Eventually, their persistence and desire to learn leads to success and their self-esteem is boosted. In addition, students with a growth mindset rely on constructive feedback to improve and are willing to learn from the mistakes and success of other people. Studies indicate that students show improvement after receiving a negative feedback. Failing to develop the growth mindset can potentially affect the success of a student eventually leading to low-self. Due to this, there is an interest in the impact of a growth mindset on self-esteem. The rationale for selecting the research topic Owing to the rigorous expectations of the education system associated with the state’s core standards of performance and standardized examinations, students are expected to effectively master difficult concepts within a specified period of time. This calls for high commitment in their study without being affected by their failures. Therefore, there is a need for developing a growth mindset in order to be successful in their coursework. This study aims at finding out the impact of a growth mindset on the students' self-esteem. Arguably, this fixed mindset actually works against attaining success while growth mindset permits an individual to get more as well as taking life challenges and also becoming successful. Dangerous Roads Ahead: Sample Research Paper Introduction Using a cell phone while driving has become common practice. It extends beyond simply glancing at a GPS application or checking a message while stopped at a red light. While driving, people are texting friends, making calls, playing music, and even watching videos. Studies show that using a person using a cell phone while driving reacts similarly to a drunk driver: he or she is unaware and distracted (Watson 108). These results mixed with the staggering number of accidents and deaths caused by driving while using cell phones show more research must be done and action must be taken. This paper explores what solutions have been created to curb these dangers and the effectiveness of such legislation. Research found that state laws banning cell phone use is effective and such laws should be implemented and strictly enforced in all states; if such laws are not passed and enforced, the roads will be more dangerous. Background Copious amounts of research have shown that using a cell phone while driving is dangerous. A study completed by Strayer and Drews found that hand-held device use while driving increases brake time and response time by eighteen percent (74). Another study observed drivers, and the results showed that drivers have less control over their automobiles and have slower responses to other drivers if using cellular phones (Ranney 12). Such findings led state legislators to push for a ban of hand-held device use while driving. While every state has considered a ban, only six states have passed a law that bans cell phone use while driving (Sundeen 81). A number of states have restricted cell phone use by requiring that drivers keep one hand on the steering wheel or only allowing drivers to speak on their devices, not text (Governers). Because these laws are relatively new, there is not much research into their effectiveness; however, the research conducted thus far has been powerful. Body # 1 Laws banning hand-held devices should be implemented in all states. As previously stated, only six states have laws completely banning cell phone use; a majority of the states have partial bans, and three states have no restrictions on hand-held device use while driving (Illinois 4). Laws that completely forbid cell phone use while driving should be passed in all states because they will lead to fewer accidents and car-related deaths. In “Dangerous Driving,” a study conducted by Alexander G. Nikolaev, Matthew J. Robins, and Sheldon H. Jacobson looked at the amount of automobile accidents, injuries, and deaths before and after the law prohibiting cell phone use while driving was passed. It found that forty-six counties in New York had fewer accidents (Nikolaev 70). This study proves that passing a law banning cell phone use will lead to fewer accidents and deaths. Therefore, such a law will make the roads safer and should be passed. Body # 2 For the states that already have laws banning cell phone use while driving and the states that will, in the future, have laws, punishment for breaking the law should be more severe. It is difficult to always punish those who use hand-held devices while driving. However, those who are caught should pay a large fee and have a negative point added to their license. Studies completed by McCartt and Geary found that in New York cell phone use decreased immediately after the law was passed but later increased (43). This may be due to feeling comfortable and unaffected by the law. It may also be caused by the weak punishment. Cell phone use while driving does not have a high fee. Other than Alaska, the ticket costs fewer than two hundred dollars (Illinois 6). This ticket also does not count as a moving violation; therefore, it does not dramatically affect one’s license and can be paid with a small fine and traffic school. This is not enough of a deterrent to make people choose not to use their devices while driving. If punishment were more severe, people would not commit the crime. Thus, the penalty for using a cell phone while driving should be more stern; the ticket should cost more, and it should count as a moving violation. Counter-Argument Opponents of banning hand-held devices while operating a vehicle believe it is too early to enact such a law because studies are inconclusive. McCarrett believes there is insufficient evidence to prove using a cell phone while driving increases the chance of accidents (12). Similarly, a study by the NHTSA claims people are not more likely to be in an accident if using a hand-held device. While it is true that there is not much research into this topic and not all research proves drivers are more likely to be in an accident if using a hand-held device, that is, first, because this is a relatively new issue. Cell phones have existed for fewer than one hundred years and have been easily accessible for the public for fewer than thirty years. Therefore, it is understandable that there is not much evidence into the dangers associated with using cell phones while driving. Second, the research conduced has found evidence that those driving while using a hand-held device are distracted and have slower response time, consequently, more likely to be in an accident. Finally, millions of automobile accidents, injuries, and fatalities have occurred while a driver used a hand-held device. The number is most likely higher due to those who will not admit to using a cell phone and to unreported accidents. This evidence proves it is not too early to pass a law; it is too late to not have passed such laws in every state. Conclusion In conclusion, this paper aimed to explore the effectiveness of cell phone use while driving. It found that a small number of states have passed laws completely banning hand-held device use while driving, and many states have partial bans. After reviewing the research, it was found that using a cell phone while driving increases response time and makes drivers more distracted which leads to more accidents. Therefore, all states should ban cell phone use while driving and the punishment for breaking the law should be more severe in order to deter drivers. Until the law is passed in every state and the punishment is more strict, accidents that lead to injuries and fatalities will continue to occur every day. Therefore, it is imperative that every state passes a law banning cell phone use while driving.
