Alyafie 1 Omar Alyafie Johanna Nilsson, Uzziel Pecina ANCH II 205 Self in a Multicultural Society Cultural Identity assignment 2/13/2018 Cultural Identity Cultural identity is one's part of self-perception and conception. It is related to social class, generation, nationality, locality, religion, and ethnicity or other distinct social groups. People believe that it is the ability to group to a group or culture. It also involves the characteristics and behaviors of a particular ethnic group. Everyone has a cultural identity which helps to give information about where they come from and giving a sense of belonging to oneself. This paper analyses my cultural identity giving specific details to cultural problems such as racism, discrimination, social class religious differences, language and education among others. In the United States, racism have been there since the civil war era. The whites are given several privileges that the black Americans or blacks are denied such rights as voting rights, wide criminal procedures, and land acquisition. These make us and the immigrants feel that we are lesser human beings than the whites while the whites feel superior. For instance, we went out as a group me and my friends to a live concert, we were having an outstanding time, and suddenly we hear someone from the crowd shouting ‘‘hey Osama’’ which made me Alyafie 2 feel I was targeted. We feel excluded and out of the home, and this fact deters us from performing our duties perfectly. Racial discrimination is also common in the United States in its various forms such as racial politics. Racial politics remains a major phenomenon that reflects in socioeconomic inequality. It occurs in housing, education, government, lending and also in employment. For instance, the whites are believed to own the best houses since they have a lot of money to rent or buy the apartments. They have also specific areas or villages that are meant specifically for them, although other races could be allowed to live in. Social class is also a major drawback in a new nation for example in the United States. The whites are the masters and therefore are considered high class. Social class is therefore controversial and exists in three models, the rich, the middle class and the poor. The social class is determined by other factors such as occupation, education, wealth and income. For someone who just migrated to America and has no occupation no wealth status will face discrimination Religious differences are also a key factor in determining the cultural background, selfconception and belonging to a particular group. Religion exists in four groups, the Christians, the Protestants, the evangelical Protestants and mainline Protestants. As for the Americans, religion plays a very important role in their lives and a non-believer in the same is not entertained. Historically the United States has always been marked by religious pluralism and diversity hence the Americans would want to keep off from those who do not identify with any of the faiths in the different States. Language is important in the United States the Americans most identify themselves with the British or American English. Any other language would differentiate you from them and they would feel out of place with you. If a member who just joined them recently in their Alyafie 3 State is unable to use English fluently then he or she will suffer much. For example, when first arrived to the United States, I was on the airport waiting in the TSA line, then when I have reached to the screening devise, I could not understand what he was saying and the TSA kept laughing at me since that I could not understand what to do at that situation. Education is an important factor in any developing or developed nations. Most of the developments, if not all are arrived at through education. The United States recognizes and appreciates education as its major stronghold that mainly leads to developments. The Whites believe that they have a greater potential and therefore can do much better than any other race in the world. They believe that no one is able to challenge them in terms of education since they have all the resources that they need such as, books apparatus, well-developed institutions and the resources that they need. They also produce the superpowers, best medics and can offer all services due to technology and knowledge. They do not, therefore, give a chance to immigrants but refer to them as poor and dark in mind hence nothing best can become of them. In conclusion of the above points, many people who have traveled to the States for education or job among other reasons have had a hard time getting used to the various cultural changes that they find. They have no choice other than to adapt and accomplish their main agenda. They face problems that could even prevent them from giving their whole self into their main agenda but have to cope and survive. The whites are believed to be a better race because of their color which is very wrong since even the blacks have a greater power to perform in social life, education or work just to mention a few. People should not be looked down upon in terms of where they come from judgment is better passed on our abilities as we work on our weaknesses. Everyone is weak in a specific area and strong at another, therefore, we should always appreciate ourselves as well as others and be ready to help others learn.
