Evolution of Popular Culture (pop culture)
In this essay, I am going to discuss how (popular culture) the entirety of ideas, perspectives,
images, attitudes and other common phenomena within the mainstream population of specific
cultures has changed or evolved over time.
Popular culture or pop culture is a mainstream or a culture that is in demand at among a wide
range of people particular place at a particular time. Such a culture is available, accessible and
understood by everyone in the society. Pop culture is expressed in the way people live their lives
on a daily basis. (Burke, 1990)It can be seen in the kind of music, art, literature, sports, and
fashion ad pretty much any form of lifestyle most exhibited by the mainstream. Use and
development of pop culture doesn’t require any special knowledge of set of skills hence each
member of society contributes to its development by merely living their lives. The greatest tool
that reinforces development and evolution of pop culture is the media through which it is spread.
This determines whether such a culture will grow enough to be a popular culture or not. Popular
culture influences the way of life and attitudes of society towards certain topics. At the same
time, the masses influence the kind of pop culture that will be in their midst. Pop culture is
different or every generation. Human culture has existed from pre-historic society (Purdew,
1985). The things that such prehistoric society considered popular in their day are now
considered folkways. For something to be pop culture, it is required that the people actually
practice it. Different generations have different needs and different influences which mandate a
change in lifestyle. A change in lifestyle eventually leads to an evolution in their popular
cultures. This is the driving force behind evolution of the various forms of popular culture.

The three most significant forms of pop culture mile posts in the early ages are wedding
ceremonies, music performances and the establishment of styles in fashion. Wedding ceremonies
are found in history even before the biblical times. They began as religious traditions but people
quickly adopted it into their lives and began celebration marriages despite their religious
backgrounds. Although some of the traditions that went into planning such ceremonies persist to
this date, most have undergone a multitude of changes across the globe. People have adapted
weddings to suit their own cultures and religions. There are wedding ceremonies that do not
acknowledge religion any more. Previously, music performance was just live. A person who had
never heard a certain song or composition could not possibly play it. However, during the
renaissance period, music from written sources began to be performed as composers wrote down
the music notes (Wertz, 2010). Their music transcended borders as people began to learn how to
read music notes. People who had never heard of their songs were able to perform them. The
royalty or aristocracy was the first class of people to set the pace of the fashion industry. These
styles were available only for the upper class but the invention of such things as the sewing
machine by the French bourgeois social class gave fashion styles the broader popular appeal.
Hence, over a span of a few hundred years, the fashion trends changed from tights and laces to
the modern fashion trends seen today. The fashion industry has evolved greatly over the past and
continues to evolve each passing day.
The term pop culture was made up around the 19th century. This term dates from the 1950s. The
difference between pop culture and popular culture is that the former is much narrower. It covers
only the aspects of culture that are found appealing by the masses. Popular culture entails even
those things that hav...
