Abstract
Since the development of the internet technologies, many businesses in the developed
countries have incorporated it into their strategies to gain a competitive advantage over their
opponents in highly competitive markets. The same case applies to the banking industry, where
many banks in most of the developed countries today have adopted internet technology to
facilitate their operations, with the aim of achieving greater success. However, the case has
always been a little different in the developing countries. For example, the banks in Oman
continue to use the traditional methods to carry out their functions, such as banking transactions.
It is very important to have a strong financial and banking industry in a country because it can
have a substantial impact on the country’s economic development by providing sufficient
financial services.
One of the main focuses of this paper is examining why the banks in Oman still lag
behind in the use of internet technology in banking. It examines some of the inhibiting factors
behind the reluctance of this banking industry to adopt the internet technology in its banking
strategy. There is a need for change in the Omani banking system in both the informational and
procedural levels. The paper also explores through some of the benefits of the internet
technology, putting a strong case on why it would be important for the bank managers in Oman
to start rethinking their approaches and shift to the use of IT.
