1. What major contributions did David Douglas make to the understanding of the
ecology of western Canada? (2 marks)
David Douglas was one of the most famous botanical explorers in western Canada. Together
with Archibald Menzies, they discovered and named the Douglas-fir also called the
“Pseudotsuga Menzesii”. The tree changed the ecology of Western Canada and in the entire
United States as it is used in the lumber industry. Also, through his exploration in the region, he
collected samples of more than two hundred plants which he later took back to England. Most of
these plants shaped the ecology of Britain and the entire Europe until today.
