Introduction

Pregnancy should last for 40 weeks, below which any birth may be termed as premature
labor. There are numerous factors that may reduce the duration of pregnancy from the known 40
weeks to a lower number of weeks. These factors result in complications that force the baby to
come out of the womb prematurely before it is fully developed and mature to start growing on its
own. Preterm labor thus refers to the onset of labor that begins before the 37th week of the
pregnancy leading to premature birth. In the event that a women experience premature labor
leading to preterm birth, then the baby born out of such conditions will have complications and
problems later in life. The baby must, therefore, be subjected to longer and intensive nursing care
to increase their chances of survival. In rare cases, the baby born prematurely require medical
care and sometime may be subjected to surgery and other procedures to enable the baby to
recover from the issues that may have led to underdevelopment of critical organs. This paper
will discuss the risk factors that lead to premature labor, the complications that lead to premature
childbirth and then suggest possible ways of reducing the risk factors of premature labor.
Risk Factors
Among the major risk factor of premature labor is the occurrence of previous premature
birth in early pregnancies. Smoking and taking alcoholic drinks or street drugs also increase the
risk of experiencing premature labor (Silvestri,L., 2016; Silvestri,A.,2016). Failure to get the
required prenatal care, being overweight or underweight may also expose a pregnant mother to
