Gender Roles
The story Spider’s Thread has two main characters Kandata and Lord Buddha
(Akutagawa, 1918b). The former was infamous for his many transgressions such as stealing and
setting houses ablaze. Lord Buddha is portrayed as a righteous guardian angel who watches
pitifully as Kandata and other sinners plummeted into hell. Hell Screen has three main
characters; His Lordship Horikawa, Yoshinde the famous painter, and Yoshinde’s daughter who
was a lady-in-waiting (Akutagawa, 1918a). Women are secondary to men and they don’t have
equal rights like men as seen with the despicable act where His Lordship plans to burn a carriage
and a ‘voluptuous woman’ so the screen could be finished (pp. 15). In A Grove shows male
dominance as seen with the rape of Masago by Tajomaru (Akutagawa, 1922), and her fear that
her husband would no longer be interested in her (pp. 5). Women are mere objects of lust.
Comparison between Genres
Spider’s Thread portrays a small society that is very religious and those who fail to obey
are punished by being sent to the Lake of Blood which is hell (pp. 164). Hell Screen is set in a
different environment of a luxurious mansion that houses His Lordship Horikawa and his two
children. As expected, Horikawa employs a host of workers to do various chores including
Yoshinde who is a highly-skilled painter. This story has many elements such as love, greed,
