Oman has few trade unions. Most of them were formed after 2006 following the Decree
by the Sultan of Oman to allow trade union organizations in the country. Oman is the second
country in the Gulf Arab State to allow for the formation of Federation of Trade Unions. The
General Foundation of Oman Trade Union is the mother of all trade unions in Oman. Currently,
there are more than 55 labor unions in Oman. The trade unions in Oman perform four significant
functions which comprise of defending employee rights, representing employees in work-related
matters, improving the social and financial situations of employees and promoting labor rights in
the country.
Defending Employee Rights
The trade unions provide the best defense for the employees through collective action
during the time of need. The trade unions make the employees aware of their rights. Besides, the
employers are made aware of the rights governing the rights of the employees in the in the
workplace (Louër, 2015). The trade unions are independent of the employers, but they have a
