Marlenae The healthcare case that caught my eye was the Barry Lee Dorsey case. Dorsey ran a drug prescription ring forging signatures of government officials. The case took place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dorsey was sentenced in federal court to serve 6 years and 2 months with 3 years of supervised release and ordered to pay $3,533.62. He forged the prescriptions with DEA numbers, medical license numbers, signatures of real medical doctors, and DEA names. The prescriptions were for Oxycodone and Percocet and filed in large quantities in numerous of Pennsylvania pharmacies. The drugs were then paid and filled with Medicaid Funds. He then sold them on the street for profit. Healthcare fraud is so prevalent in our society because it’s hard to track and ultimately hard to prosecute, especially if it’s done behind the scenes. “Hospitals, including mental hospitals, rehabilitation, testing laboratories, and other medical facilities, are believed to defraud the government of billions of dollars annually through Medicaid and Medicare programs” (Friedrichs, 2011, p.79). Healthcare is one of the fastest growing industries in society today because of its need in society. Whether it’s for medical prescriptions, medical treatments, hospitalization, people truly depend on healthcare. Large medical industries know this in which they prey on these factors. “In the early 2000s, various cases arose out of allegations that health care financial operators, pharmaceutical companies, and hospitals made settlements ranging from $75 million to $875 million in connection with fraudulent billing of Medicare and Medicad Programs” (Friedrichs, 2011, 79) Just as in the case described, Dorsey saw an opportunity because he knew that prescription drugs would be easy to obtain and easy to sell on the streets. Being that some communities cannot afford proper healthcare. Friedrichs, D. O. (2011). Trusted criminals: White collar crime in contemporary society. Belmont (Calif.): Wadsworth.
