Poverty and Homelessness 1 UNCC300: Justice & Change in a Global World Assignment 02 The Challenge of Poverty and Homelessness in The Realization of The Aspiration of The Common Good at The Global Level Introduction The advancing technology inspires the need to have aspirations based on the common good of the people. However, its realization gets affected by many challenges including poverty and homelessness. These factors influence individual’s commitment towards the actions or outcomes that benefit them and the society. Poverty has unbreakable ties on families, the community, country, and global levels which stretches across generations. The socio-economic condition is the primary determinant of the healthy growth and development in individuals. Poverty and Homelessness 2 Individuals who are homeless and dwell in poverty live in poor living conditions and have few opportunities to realize their dreams. Therefore, the social conditions of poverty and homelessness are challenges that limit everyone from realizing the aspiration of the common good within the professional community, locally, and globally. The Challenges of Poverty and Homelessness at The Local and Global Levels At the community level, the primary reason why poverty and homelessness remain a challenge because the children are the most affected which result in the stretch of the effects across the next generations. Notably, poverty is the main cause of homelessness (Leon 2014, p.21). In this case, the community lacks opportunities to improve their living standards and fulfill their aspiration. A community that dwells in poverty would prefer using the little resources it has to meet the basic needs which, in turn, affects other developments like healthcare (Leng 2016, p. 3). Children who are either homeless or poor develop poor health behaviors and hence become vulnerable to illness and diseases (Buckner 2008, p. 75). Consequently, the achievement of the common good would require individuals to get learned and educated to model the way to the understanding of its concepts. The community has little or no resources for infrastructural developments hence the quality of education and healthcare provided to the community is inadequate. Subsequently, the prevailing conditions of poverty and homelessness limit the opportunity available for the community to achieve the aspiration of the common good. The challenge of poverty and homelessness extends to the local and global level hence limiting the whole society from achieving their aspirations and dreams. The contemporary society is characterized by the situation of class division and income inequality where majority dwells in poverty (Leon 2014, p.54). Individuals living in such conditions develop cognitive behaviors that prevent them from being socially active hence cannot realize their full potential Poverty and Homelessness 3 because of low self-esteem. When individuals can’t realize their full potential, they become less productive to the economy (Blakely 2004, p. 13). Unfortunately, most of the people who dwell in poverty and homelessness increase dependence on the government for provision of their needs and healthcare services resulting in extra-social spending. The achievement of the American dream, for example, that focus on the provision of equal and opportunity for every American to achieve their aspiration and goals, get affected by the lack of the necessary resources due to poverty. The few who are fortunate, on the other hand, cannot meet their aspiration because of the creation of an environment with a high rate of criminal activities since there exist significant correlation of poverty and criminal behaviors (Law 2009, 11). The homeless individuals would possibly migrate to other countries, which increases the poverty level of the other countries resulting in the same effects of hindering the achievement of aspirations. In the long run, the achievement of the aspirations of common good outlines that poverty remains everyone’s responsibility. Conclusion Overall, homelessness and poverty significantly limit the achievement and realization of individual aspirations both at the community, local, and global level. Individuals and the community remain dependent on the government which increases its spending on the healthcare services because the poor becomes vulnerable to illness and diseases. The individuals lack the basic needs of food and shelter and have little opportunities to achieve their aspirations. The cycle of poverty shift from one generation to another, which impacts the achievement of sustainable development and better healthcare. Provision of equal opportunity to develop potentials remains significant in the realization of individual aspirations in the global context. It means that the whole society has to join in the fight to eradicating the challenge of poverty if Poverty and Homelessness 4 they desire to achieve their aspiration. Therefore, the social conditions of poverty and homeless are challenges that limit everyone from realizing the aspiration of the common good within the professional community, locally, and globally. homelessness. There exists the need to develop solutions to address the challenge of poverty
