This essay should be between 900 and 1000 words, excluding the required annotated bibliography.

Note: Consider your audience as laymen in the field who have only general knowledge of your topic.

This essay must include a minimum of five sources. Three should be peer-reviewed sources, preferably from the APUS databases. From the library welcome page, click on Advanced Search at the bottom of the page and then check the "peer reviewed" sources box filter.

The following should clarify the term "peer-reviewed": http://youtu.be/rOCQZ7QnoN0. You may use eBooks; however, as discussed in your textbook, books generally are not as current as peer-reviewed articles. You may also use primary sources (interviews, statistics, etc); however, these primary sources should be obtained from experts within that field. If you cannot find strong sources for your chosen topic, then change your topic. If you have a question about the validity of a source, please contact a librarian: librarian@apus.edu

Make sure to include the following sections in your essay:

an introduction and claim,
background,
body,
and a conclusion.

Within the body of your essay, make sure to include the following in any order:

The background for your chosen topic,
the opposition - use an academic tone, and do not show bias,
the strengths and weaknesses of your opponents' claims,
scholarly research,
your claim -- use an academic tone, and do not show bias,
discuss the warrants for your claim and the opposition in order to find the common ground,
and show the common ground between your opponents' claim and your claim.

After you have written your essay, please make sure to revise the content of your essay. Lastly, be sure to edit your essay by checking grammar, format, and smaller technical details. Please make sure your essay is written in third person.

The Annotated Bibliography

An annotated Bibliography (AB) is due with your Rogerian essay. Using the MLA guide, list each source as it will appear on the Works Cited page of your essay. Summarize each source in two or three grammatically-correct sentences. These short summaries are the "annotations."

The following is a sample of an "annotated bibliography."

The invention of the internet has been one of the most revolutionary occurrences in the history of mankind. It has brought quite a lot of significant changes because following its existence, many other inventions have followed. The most significant of all—the social media. When one hears of the social media, it clicks as an invention of the recent past but it dates back to the late 1990s. Created in 1996, the first ever social media platform to be created was named Six Degrees. It was then followed by other platforms such as the AOL chatroom, and MySpace. Today the social media scene is dominated by giants such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Each of these enjoy massive usage on a daily basis and have more than half a million users. Essentially, the popularity of these sites has resulted in a worldwide debate over whether the social media has impacted the world positively or negatively. Significantly, the impact of the social media has been entirely overwhelming as it has, first, made the world much smaller and improved many other areas such as business and politics. Background Info The debate to whether social media is good bad started gaining momentum towards the end of the first decade of the 21st century. At this time, it was already evident that the social media was taking over the world. Researchers and scholars started evaluating the various platforms to identify the impact it was having on the society. Most of the previously conducted researches focused on how social media impacted areas such as business and public relations. In a 2009 research carried out by Donald K. Wright and Michelle D. Hinson on the impact of social media on public relations, it was established that a larger percentage of the people believed that communications were changing. Compared to a previous rating of 61% in the previous year, the report indicated that 73% had experienced this impact, an indication that there was an increase in people’s belief on social media (Wright & Hinson 6). However, at the time, it was recorded that people still relied on traditional sources for their news. On another research carried out in 2014 Surname2 by Langenfeld, Cook, Sudbeck, Luers, & Schenarts, social media was criticized for having a negative effect on the upholding of professional behavior by a group of surgical residents (31). With these two researches presenting both positive and negative impacts of the social media respectively, the debate was rife. Claim Social media is an invention that has impacted the society positively. It has impacted almost every aspect of human interaction. First and foremost, it has led to the growth of businesses worldwide. In realizing the importance of social media in product marketing, most corporations have embarked on establishing their presence on these platforms so as to build a brand (Hajli 393). As it was mentioned above, social media has had a significant impact on how businesses communicate (Wright & Hinson 8). Through the use of emails businesses are able to convey relevant information in a convenient and fast way. Imperatively, they are also able to interact with consumers using the same platforms. It has also significantly helped in the conveying of news and any other relevant information across the world. With most individuals being on social media, news about certain events circulate fast as people share and talk about them. It is this way that people living in different continents are able to come together and go against certain societal vices. For example, Facebook was used to bring to attention the cruelty of Egyptian police by activist Wael Ghonim in 2010 when he started a movement to push for the end of this vice on the social media platform (Vargas). The movement gained momentum immediately and in a short span they were organizing protests and demonstrations which later saw the sitting president at the time Hosni Mubarak resign from power. Opposing Arguments On the other end, individuals who are of the differing opinion claim that social media has changed the way people communicate, not in a positive but a negative way. It is argued that most Surname3 individuals have lost the element of being conversationalists as they have become used to chatting. In an article appearing on the Huff Post, writer Sophia Nelson argues that the presentday generation does not ‘talk anymore’. Her argument is that people now depend on phones and the various chat platforms to communicate and have foregone having face-to-face conversations. Nelson says that this new trend is the cause of the various faults being identified in families, marriages, as well as other social factions. In another argument, it has been said that social media results in the loss of privacy. In a 2011 research carried out by Gwen O’Keeffe & Kathleene Clark-Pearson on the impact of social media on the younger generation, it was stated that most young people give too much of their information on these sites (803). Again, the presence of what is referred to as the ‘digital footprint’ further takes away one’s privacy. This is because everything they do is recorded online. Common Ground Despite the grave differences, both sides agree on two things: social media is good and that how one uses is the determinant factor of how it impacts them. The fact that social media’s positive impact outweighs its negative is one thing that is undebatable. This is why most of the papers on negative impacts of social media, such as the one by O’Keeffe and Clark-Pearson, start by discussing or mentioning the good of social media (801). How an individual interacts with the platform is the determinant of the influence it will have on them. Conclusion The social media is a great invention but much like any other thing it has its disadvantages. Nonetheless, these negative sides are only dependent on how one interacts with the platforms. Using them ethically and for the appropriate reasons can only guarantee positive outcomes for the user. Surname4 Works Cited Hajli, M. Nick. A study of the impact of social media on consumers.
