Susan Robnett 2 posts Re:Topic 1 DQ 1 (Obj. 1.3) Complete the Self-Inventory of Ethical Behaviors. Select the five behaviors that you consider to be the most serious violations of ethical practice. What are the reasons for your selection of these behaviors? Explain. The five behaviors I consider to be the most serious violations of ethical practice are: 1. The leader allows the expression of pent-up rage in group sessions but does not take precautions to see that members are not physically injured in these exercises . It is the counselor's responsibility to ensure both the physical and emotional safety for all the group members. 1. The leader presses members to experience intense emotions and pushes for a catharsis-even if they say they do not want to explore a struggle-out of conviction that they need to experience their emotions to become free. A counselor should never push a client past the point of their emotional comfort zone in a group setting. This could be dangerous for the client. This could result in unfinished business for the client as well as being triggering for all members in the group. 1. The leader frequently brings her outside, personal concerns into the group and is willing to be both a member and a leader, on the assumption that such behavior is good modeling for others in the group. A counselor must maintain appropriate boundaries with clients to promote a safe and healing environment. Counselors need to maintain professionalism and deal with their own issues on their own time. This involves counselors practicing self-care and having their own support system. 1. A group leader imposes some of her values because she is convinced that it is her job to teach morality. Counselor's need to hold their clients in high regard and be non-judg mental so they can create a safe therapeutic environment in which the client's will feel comfortable enough to have open honest communication which promotes healing. 1. Although a group leader does not make use of coercion and pressure strategies himself, he does allow other members to apply undue pressure at times because of his belief that it is a natural part of the evolution of the group. Letting other group members put undue pressure on a client would be dangerous for the client and the other group members. The counselor would risk harming the clients as well as losing control of the group. C.2.b. New Specialty Areas of Practice Counselors practice in specialty areas new to them only after appropriate education, training, and supervised experience. While developing skills in new specialty areas, counselors take steps to ensure the competence of their work and protect others from possible harm.
