Sierra Leone Mission Trip

The water supply situation in Serra Leone is characterized by the inadequacy and limited
access to safe water for domestic uses. The citizens residing in the rural areas depend heavily on
the traditional water sources such as rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds for the drinking and
domestic water. The access to safe water all over the country remains limited despite different
interventions by the government and nongovernment interventions. The situation has not only hit
the rural areas but also the capital, Freetown that has been experiencing dry taps and insufficient
water supply. The water sources are far from the residential areas, and women and children have
to make the long trips to retrieve the water in the rural areas that make most of Sierra Leone.
Despite the long trips, the water is still not safe for consumption. It is contaminated by animal
waste and improperly disposed of solid waste posing danger to its consumers. Its consumption
usually leads to diarrhea, a common and second largest life threat to children under the age of
five years.
The struggle for safe water in Sierra Leone and particularly rural areas has put the lives of
the residents in real jeopardy. Water is life. It is used for drinking, cooking, farming, cleaning
and other significant duties. The provision and use of safe and clean water imply safety to the
uses and low risks to contraction of waterborne diseases and illnesses. Our areas of residences,
workplaces, and public places have easily accessible and safe water. Obtaining it is easy and
usually taken for granted. Imagining the struggle of searching and going for long miles to access
even the unsanitary water is troubling. It will, therefore, be my team's desire and aim to establish
ways to help the residents in Tonkolili, a rural district of Sierra Leone, gain access to safe
domestic water using the available resources, educating them on risks associated with
consumption of the contaminated water. We shall provide personnel amongst ourselves to

rehabilitate five wells that will provide access to water for the society and put in measures where
the well will be protected, designed and secured from any kind of contamination. The project
will save the society from diseases and eliminate the long journeys that women and children
endure in the search for safe water. The team will comprise of six persons and will last for
twenty days.
