Description

Laboratory report details (Please see attachments) As part of a larger analysis, O’Connor and Shimizu (2002) examined the association between personal control beliefs and coping styles. The purpose of this assignment is to write a standard report based on a replication of that part of the O’Connor and Shimizu (2002) paper to examine the association between personal control beliefs and coping styles of Australian university students.

That is, the chance of incorrectly rejecting the null hypothesis is really quite low. • The size of the correlation (r) provides an idea of the strength of that relationship (that is, effect size) between the two measures. E.g., larger correlation = stronger effect. • According to Cohen, r of ≤ .30 is small effect; between .31 and .50 is a medium effect; and ≥ .50 is a large effect. 2 13/04/2018 What did O’Connor & Shimizu find? Table III. Pearson’s product moment correlations between all study variables in the British sample. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1. Personal control — 2. Perceived stress 0.32* — 3. Negative mood 0.29* 0.60** — 4. Emotion‐focus cope 0.11 0.32* 0.28 0.27 0.24 0.37* — * p < 0.01; **p < 0.001. • A correlation of .39 between personal control and problem‐focused coping…means… • Stats language: As scores on the personal control increased, so did scores on problem‐focused coping • Reporting language: Participants who reported greater internal control also reported greater use of problem‐focused coping methods when dealing with life difficulties in the last month • Aspects of the questions are included in the reporting language. • Use reporting language in the report • And the size of the effect between the problem‐focused coping and personal control was small to medium 3 13/04/2018 What did we find? 1 1. Start preparing sections of your APA formatted assignment…and follow the instructions given 2. Do make sure that you use previous lab reports to provide tips on how to write this lab report. • See Assignment 2 folder on Blackboard for examples of APA formatted papers 3. Writing up the results: see http://webs.wofford.edu/boppkl/courseFiles/Expmtl/PPTslides/Writing% 20up%20results.pdf • With one exception….when inspecting the last slide….given the small number of correlations to report, there is no need for a general introduction at the beginning of the results section • Using a table or reporting in text is up to you…but don’t use both. 4. As you come up with questions for each section, please ask these questions in tutorials or post them on the discussion board for your tutor (on‐campus students); or on the discussion board (specifically for off‐ campus students). 4 from the SAGE Social Science Collections.
