Prostitution among immigration routes, commonly known as sex and human
trafficking is a global societal problem that needs to be addressed in order to achieve a better
quality of life (Coutin, 2005). Engaging in prostitution is often a difficult choice; especially
for those women who seek to escape their socio-cultural conditions that often involve abject
poverty, different forms of abuse and the hope of acquiring a better life for their families.
According to the video, it is clear that although many women are usually pulled into
prostitution in search of a better life and as a means of making repayments to their traffickers
for according them the ‘opportunity’, there are those who use this means to gain illegal
entries into other countries which they believe hold the potential for a better future.
Consequently, they also need to raise money to survive in a new and strange country through
this unorthodox means and are sometimes duped by their traffickers who may fail to pay
them. The video also depicts the worldwide talks on the rampant feminization in immigration
routes, arguing that about 54% of all global immigrants are female. The United States, in
particular, has also had a fair share of this problem with people crossing over the border
through the Senora Desert in Mexico, which has been found to be notorious for having
nightclubs and brothels in which numerous numbers of women work in order to pay off their
traffickers. Sadly, some of these women end up being forced into slavery or face the danger
of contracting fatal sexually transmitted diseases and infections. The video estimates that
about 460 illegal immigrants have died in their quest to join the United States along this
border alone.

different elements of a particular social structure. Consequently, the text also argues that the
society is responsible for various crimes that are committed in any geographical area and that

criminality is greatly related to the social interactions between people. Social structure
theories hold the belief that people’s positions in the social and economic structure largely
influences their possibilities of becoming criminals. As a result, those individuals that hail
from backgrounds in which the socioeconomic culture is challenged portray higher chances
of becoming criminals in order to sustain themselves and acquire some form of financial
security because they lack opportunities for self-development and improvement in th...
