African-American culture can also be referred
to as the Black or Black-American culture.
Their identity as distinct from or part of the
American culture is deeply rooted in their
historical experiences.
It includes a mixture of Sahelian and subSaharan African cultures (Price & Mintz, 2013)
In spite of their emancipation in early
centuries, their cultural beliefs and values
have survived over time.
This culture includes numerous traditions
from African ethnic groups which is mostly
centred on the importance of family and
religion.
The intersection of slavery, poverty, racial
segregation and lack of equal opportunities
have greatly helped to shape their worldview
today.
The African-American method of
communication is largely influenced by their
cultural norms.
Communication therefore intertwines with
history, the environment and cultural values.
Some of the norms and values that govern
their communication include faith and
religion, family and community, fatalism,
trust and respect (Ware, 2006).
In multicultural societies, there are bound to
be numerous intercultural communication
challenges (Ryan et al., 2007).
This is because of excessive judgements,
misunderstandings and biases mostly
fostered by stereotyping and ethnocentrism.
These factors have contributed to negative
portrayal of the African-American way of
communication.
Other factors include; Contrasts in core
beliefs which differ depending on each
individual’s personal experiences.
