ASSESSMENT 4 CONTEXT Ethics is a very important topic for leaders; anyone who has studied ethics knows that ethical codes, ethical beliefs, and ethical standards are not the same everywhere. Leaders who advocate for global growth of the business run the risk of potentially compromising both their personal and organizational ethics. To stay in business, leaders need to pay attention to profitability, while at the same time taking care to pay attention to the social and environmental impacts from an ethical standpoint (Quinn & Velsor, 2010). They need to be globally responsible, meaning they are responsible socially, environmentally, and from a corporate perspective (Quinn & Velsor, 2010). "Ethical behavior is doing the right thing even when nobody's looking." – Aldo Leopold. A good example of how a firm failed to be globally responsible by focusing on short term profit over longterm growth and sustainability of the organization is PepsiCo. In 1989, PepsiCo entered the Indian market and became a leading beverage manufacturer in the country over a 15-year period. But because PepsiCo's leadership focused on profitability and not enough on societal and environmental impacts, the organization came under attack (from 2003–2006) from the Indian government when pesticides were discovered in its products. It also found itself involved in a larger controversy about ground water contamination. PepsiCo eventually won back the respect and business in the country with a new CEO who was extremely socially and environmentally focused (Mohanty & Banerjee, 2011). The CEO successfully achieved this by advocating that everyone in the organization become globally responsible. It became a way of life for them. References Leopold, A. (n.d.). Aldo Leopold quotes. Volkswagen emissions scandal
The Volkswagen scandal, also known as the diesel dupe occurred on September 2015.
The issue involved a tussle between the Volkswagen Company and the American Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) where it was discovered that a good number of the Volkswagen cars
being distributed in the United States of America had adverse effects on the environment
(Hotten, 2015). It is common for locomotives that use fuel to release pollutants in the atmosphere
but this company had some corporate ethical issues that made the situation worse.
The primary ethical challenge facing corporate leadership
The Environmental Protection Agency, through a sufficient investigation discovered that
the Volkswagen vehicles deceived had a deception system where they possessed a defeat device,
software that changed the performance of the diesel engines when they were being tested.
Passing the emission test was the only way the company could have survived in the market, and
it fully enjoyed the misleading practice. The misleading results were in the favor of the company
which continued to emit pollutants in the American atmosphere and environment. Volkswagen, a
German automotive giant admitted to having cheated in the strict emissions tests which were
conducted as a mandatory activity in all cars imported into the US market. This discovery
exposed the malicious activi...
