PUBLIC VERSUS PRIVATE HEALTHCARE SYSTEMS
Human beings have various needs such as shelter, food, education and clothing. The
government of the day usually tries its level best so that all its citizens get the basic needs.
However, most people can do without some of these basic needs but not without proper health
care. Health involves primary, secondary and tertiary health care. Primary health includes disease
prevention by measures such as vaccination of children for poliovirus and health education. In
secondary health care, diagnoses and treatments are made, whereas follow up and palliative care
are involved in tertiary care. Good health is paramount for human survival. We can do without
electricity, good roads or school but our bodies cannot tolerate fevers, headaches, palpitations,
diarrhea, vomiting, weight loss, loss of appetite, abdominal mass, the list of signs and symptoms
of diseases goes on and on, it is endless. We often seek medical care immediately we start
experiencing such signs and symptoms. However, healthcare is not that easily accessed in our
health facilities as we would wish. There are a lot of challenges ranging from high medical bills to
inadequate medical staffs in our hospitals. Other problems include the endless queues, the distant
hospitals from our areas of residence and lack of proper equipment to facilitate diagnosis and
treatment of diseases (Mossialos et al. 2016).
It is for this reason that healthcare provision is a significant matter in most countries. In
this article, the debate will be on public versus private healthcare systems. Let me explain, for the
sake of those who do not comprehend these terms, the meaning of public and private health care.
Public healthcare means that health services are being provided for by the government. The
government is responsible for building and maintaining hospitals, employing doctors, nurses and
other medical staffs and also regulating insurance premiums in favor of the general public. In
public healthcare, the government uses national resources allocated in the budget of the federal
