I have known in my heart ever since I was a young girl what I wanted to become when I
grow up. I grew up knowing that one day my dreams will become a reality. Born and raised in a
socio-economically disadvantaged immigrant family, I dedicated myself to ensuring that I
develop a career that could uplift my family. At the age of 3, we moved to the United States
together with my parents in a bid to look for better opportunities. Life became hard as my father
worked as a deliveryman at a supermarket and my mother became a street vendor. At the age of
16, I applied for my first job with the hope to live a better life and help support my family.
Balancing school and work at that age was not easy, but I had to push hard to help support my
parents and siblings while at the same time attending high school. I struggled so hard to maintain
a passing grade in high school since I gave little attention to school as I was more focused on
making money to support my family. At the age of 17, I still could not understand the value of
education because growing up in the economically disadvantaged family; my parents gave little
