M2: Leadership Overview Since we will be talking about women and leadership, it is important for you to have some foundational knowledge in the topic of leadership. While we will not have time to explore this topic in detail there are a few concepts that are important for you to know. Discussions of leadership sometimes refer to the Trait Theories and the Great Man Theories. While the trait theory is no longer viewed to be the way to explain and/or predict leadership effectiveness, it does still impact the ways perceptions of women in business. Readings • • • • • For an overview of leadership theories review the information at Mind Tools Leadership Theories. For more specific information on transformational leadership review the information at Mind Tools Transformational Leadership. To begin to see how the leadership theories have a relationship with the topic of women and leadership, read these articles/chapters. It is recommended that you read these after the general leadership orientation through the above websites. Also, the Ayman and Korabik (2010) article should be read with the goal of understanding the importance of gender and culture in the leadership discussion. There are additional research details that you may find interesting, but you can also skim. K&R, Chapter 2, The Great Women Theory of Leadership? Perils and Positive Stereotypes and Precarious Pedestals, pages 93-126. Ayman and Korabik (2010) Leadership: Why Gender and Culture Matter, American Psychologist, 65(3), 157-170. M2 Discussion After you read the assigned article, please answer the following questions. You do not have to answer them all at one time (and remember you need to post on at least three separate occasions during the module). • • • What concept(s), idea(s) did you find the most surprising in the reading? Think about an effective leader you have seen (either in the workplace or your personal life), into which category of leader does s/he fit best? .For what reasons do you see that leaders as fitting that style? You can review the material on discussion posts found in Module 1. M2 Written Assignment: Submit Research Paper Topic (due end of Week 2) Please submit your research paper option here by the end of Week 2. If you choose Option 1, you must submit the name of the female executive/leader that you will interview and how you will have access to her (e.g., you work in the same location). If you choose Option 2, you must submit a brief summary (a few sentences) of the topic you are interested in exploring. I do not expect your idea to be fully developed but you will need to start focusing on a topic fairly soon so that the completion of the research paper project is feasible.
