“They stem from the meanings conveyed by the concept technology itself, and from the peculiar role it enables us to confer on the mechanic arts as an ostensibly discrete entity - one capable of becoming a virtually autonomous, all- encompassing agent of change.” (Marx, 2010 Pg. 564) Here Marx is referring to how the hazards he sees with technology are not referring to the physical aspect, but instead the conceptual. The physical aspects would be something of the sorts as the damage that a nuclear bomb could have thanks to the advancement of technology. However, I feel that this sentence is referring to the level of advancement in technology, such as artificial intelligence. We are creating technology that has the ability to constantly learn on its own, and his fear of us not being able to control that technology. That is a fear that I have often felt myself, computers and other technology are able to understand our patterns and act upon them. “It is ambiguous because the whole system, apart from the hardware, is so inclusive, so various - its boundaries so vague as to defy exact representation.” (Marx, 2010 Pg. 574) This is describing how a complex form of technology such as a computer can have so much advancement that the average user may not even know where the true technology is located. The paragraph leading to this refers to a computer chip. The average user may see the whole computer as a technological advancement, but in reality, there are several hundreds of technological advancements within a single computer. "Here we tacitly invest a machine with the power to initiate change, as if it were capable of altering the course of events, of history itself” (Marx, 2010 Pg. 577) This sentence was referring to the cotton-picking machines ability to change the way that farming was conducted. It allowed for black farm workers to migrate to the north and allowed them to start new lives and alter history. It shows the importance of technology and how it can be used by society to allow change. Even though this is a good instance of change within society made possible by technologies effects, this could also be used hazardously if done in a way that was to set society backward. A less From my understanding of the word technology i see it as the physical device (usually electronic or mechanical) created in a scientific manner to fulfill a purpose or task. I do not see the word technology as "the study" of something just because of the suffix ology. However when new words are created their meaning can change based on societies understanding of the topic. "The answer, from the viewpoint of a cultural historian, is that the emergence of a keyword in public discourse - whether a newly coined word or an old word invested with new meaning - may prove to be an illuminating historical event" (Marx 562). I found this sentence important because it made it clear to me that the meaning of the word technology has changed overtime with the inventions of more sophisticated devices and a more broad scope of abilities the tech has. As time passes technology becomes the old word invested with new meaning as stated by Marx and becomes less specific. As I have argued, the generality of the word - its lack of specificity, the very aspect which evidently enabled it to supplant its more explicit and substantial precursors - also made it peculiarly susceptible to reification (Marx 576). This sentence also struck me as important because it brings to light the dangers of not having a clear cut idea of the word technology. Because of its different uses This sentence also struck me as important because it brings to light the dangers of not having a clear cut idea of the word technology. Because of its different uses and references in the past its meaning is a bit fuzzy and the word technology is used in multiple instances. "The term that formerly had named a field of study now referred to the society's entire stock of technical knowledge and equipment" (Marx 575) | singled out this sentence because it views the term technology a little different then my on view. It not only encompasses the physical devices but the knowledge of them as well. Marx goes further on to say that the boundary between material and ideological components of technology are blurred. It also further confirms the constant change in the term technology and indecision. It was this void, presumably, that the work technology , in its new and extended meaning, eventually would fill. It would prove to be preferable-a more apt signifier- for the new agents of change than any of its precursors, received terms such as the mechanic (or useful or practical or industrial) arts, or invention, improvement, machine, machinery, or mechanism.” Technology exists throughout the world today and continues to grow more and more every year. The reliance and dependence on technology has become a social issue within this generation. Children, teenagers, and adults have relied too much on technology for everything that without technology most people would be lost. Leo Marx agrees that technology has become a social issue and that the reliance on it has made people suffer in humanity. Cell phones and social media have inhabited our social skills. People talk through technology and do not have as much face to face interaction. Marx believes that the idea of technology has created disappointment and anxiety throughout this

Technology keeps on changing and improving every day. In the past man would rely on
meat and plants as the only food, but today, with further inventions in technology, there are
many types of food that we can consume. For instance, meat can be prepared and consumed in
different ways, milk can be processed into other foods. What I meant is that technology has
given man many food options that he can consume. Unlike in the past, where he had to rely on
meat, herbs, roots, and fruits. I also think language can be developed because it is not something
we are born with. A child...
