During my search for articles specific to my practice are in SAGE peer-reviewed periodicals, I
chose an article by Luís Carlos Lopes-Júnior titled Advanced Practice Nursing and the Expansion
of the Role of Nurses in Primary Health Care in the Americas, SAGE Open Nursing. This article
aims to describe changes in the functions of the APNs working in primary health care systems in
the Americas (Gusenbauer & Haddaway, 2020). This piece falls right into my purview of study
since my concern is on how nurses can assume other responsibilities to enhance their
performance in delivering healthcare to patients as well as efforts to enhance the healthcare
system. This is an important topic given that the subject of APN is an effective way of
establishing how advanced nurses can help work towards overcoming workforce shortage and
enhancement of access to quality care.
I used Walden University Library to find this article and searched it under SAGE Journals
category. This is one of the numerous scholarly databases available through the library and is
very useful for the identification of peer-reviewed full text academic and clinical articles in many
health care disciplines including nursing (Gusenbauer & Haddaway, 2020).
While I was searching for this article I faced some initial difficulties. One of the challenges
included the problem of identifying an article that focused on expansion of roles of the nurse in
relation to specific area I was interested in. Performing a search brought up different articles
other than the ones of interest and such specific key words as ‘advanced practice nursing’,
‘primary healthcare’, ‘nursing roles in Americas’ (Luís Carlos Lopes-Júnior RN, 2021).
Furthermore, the process of filtering the results was slightly complicated because I had to make
sure that I ticked certain checkboxes like Peer-Reviewed Articles and certain Date Range among
others. However, every time I tried to search this article again, the google filtering seemed to
have tightened up and I could only find the article once I had fine-tuned my keywords in.
The use of SAGE Journals database was beneficial in the conduct of the academic research. It
has a large number of research journals with articles on topics within nursing, medicine, and
health care policies that are useful in comprehending current dynamics of the nursing
profession (Gusenbauer & Haddaway, 2021). That is one of the major strengths of using this
database, being able to have access to the full text of the articles. Some of the databases may
only allow the user to access abstracts, which are not very helpful when carrying out detailed
research. SAGE Journals on the other hand enabled me to read and review the full contents of
the article which are relevant in elaborating the topic in detail.
In my opinion, my colleagues would also find this database useful when searching for
information regarding nursing practice, healthcare policies or primary care developments. This
makes it convenient to search or hop between different article of interest within this particular
field of health care (Gusenbauer & Haddaway, 2020). On the operation, the easy-to-navigate
interface, though is a little unfamiliar at first glance, you can easily make searches with functions
like filter by publication type, date, and more topics. also, the database contains only articles of
peer-reviewed journals that are proved to be relevant and appropriate for purely academic
purposes.
Without doubt, I will recommend SAGE Journals database to my colleagues. It is for this reason
that it contains a wide coverage of articles, full text and specialized in the area of nursing and
healthcare hence being useful for anyone carrying out research or working under evidencebased practice. Of particular benefit to those in the nursing profession, the publication provides
current information on issues affecting the field and innovation in healthcare setting; it will
complement the study of APN roles, healthcare policy, and clinical practices.

Practice Area and Area of Interest
The peer-reviewed article I selected that interests me currently and as a future PMHNP is titled
'Knowledge of Yoga and its Application in Psychiatry'. This article looks at how and why yoga
works for mental health, including ethics (yam and niyama), asana (postures), breathing
techniques (pranayama), and meditation, including cessation of sensation and also
enlightenment.
Database Choice
The database I used to search for this peer-reviewed article was the EBSCO database. I did not
have difficulties using this database because I had previously used it. However, learning how to
query the database years ago requires some practice. For example, I searched for the keywords
‘mantra’ and ‘mental health’. In this database, you cannot type all the keywords into the first
line; instead, you must use the modifiers of and, but, and or, etc., to assist the search. So, my
query looked like ‘mantra AND mental health’. I then set the date range from 2019 to 2024 and
selected only full-text and peer-reviewed scholarly journals. A student must maintain an
exploratory attitude and be able to reproduce similar results across various databases using
distinguishable queries to improve academic research (Gusenbauer & Haddaway, 2021).
EBSCO – Useful and Recommended
This database is often utilized in graduate nursing and medical programs as it is easy to use and
comprehensive. It includes literature for nurses, nurse educators, nursing students, and medical
professionals. EBSCO is known to be reliable and evidence-based, with peer-reviewed journals
containing extensive resources for academia and research that maintain the integrity of findings
(Oermann et al., 2021). I recommend this database to all my colleagues as it is straightforward
to use, can be accessed by querying keywords, and provides content you could never find using
Google Scholar, for example.
