Description

This option provides you with an opportunity to integrate race, ethnicity, socioeconomic class, and gender categories in the context of a major current event.

Choose a current event that is making national or international headlines; your instructor can help you decide. It might be a story about an election, a natural disaster, the global economy, a highly publicized criminal trial, or an event in the entertainment industry.

Then, analyze how race, ethnicity, socioeconomic class, and gender intersect and impact the event itself, the coverage of the event, and the event’s results. For example, if you decide to look at mass shootings in the United States, you will discuss who the shooters are (race, ethnicity, class, gender) and how the media portrays them (race, ethnicity, class, gender) as well as the victims (race, ethnicity, class, gender), etc. How old are the perpetrators and the victims? How quickly was the media to cover the story? Who are the reporters (race, gender)?

This is an analytical research paper where you will be following the case/event and using scholarly resources to guide your critical thinking throughout your report. That is, support statements with evidence.

  1. Include an introduction.
  2. Your paper must be at 8-10 pages in length, not counting the title and reference pages, which you must include.
  3. The paper should synthesize current, relevant research on your topic from at least 5 scholarly sources.
  4. References in APA format.

Introduction
There have been a lot of mass shootings going on in the United States, and especially in the
last few years. On this note, a lot of lives have been lost, and a lot of people have gone to jail for
being behind these shootings. It has been a period of mourning for a lot of the families affected
as well as being a period of eye-opening for the civilians as well as authorities on the dangers of
gun ownership and ease of access of these killing machines. It is putting people on their toes,
especially those who have school-going children since they are not sure whether they will be
seeing their own at the end of the day. Children in this day and age have come to a point where
they have been given too much freedom on the decisions they end up making.
This paper will seek to take an in-depth look at the racial numbers of people involved in the
mass shootings in the United States as well as the socioeconomic class, the ethnicity and the
gender that ends up falling victim to these cases and the guilty parties involved. The paper will
look at three views: the victims, the guilty parties or the perpetrators and the reporting parties or
the media. They have all been involved in the mass shootings. The victims end up losing their
lives; the perpetrators are the ones who are calling the shots and carrying out the mass shootings
while the reporters are the ones that are responsible for the reporting of the mass shootings as
they happen or after they happen while they are on the ground. It is essential to understand the
impacts that the four factors (gender, socioeconomic class, ethnicity, and race) are clearly
understood in terms of the effect they have.
The mass shootings have been happening all over: from schools to clubs, to churches, to
streets and even to offices. The highest number of people to have fallen victim, so far, fall within
the Las Vegas shooting category; a shooting that saw 604 people shot at. The shooting occurred

at a concert held in Las Vegas in October 2017. 58 of the concert goers were killed during the
shootout while 546 people were injured during the shooting.
49 people were killed in an Orlando nightclub while 53 were wounded during the shooting.
Schools have also fallen victim to these mass shootings given the fact that schools hold a
significant number of people who are innocently there to get their degrees and then get done, but
a lot of schools have lost children and workers to these occurrences. The perpetrators either end
up killing themselves or being caught following the aftermath of their conduct (Anestis, 2018).
With regard to mass shootings, it is essential to take into consideration the gender ratios and
more so, the numbers behind the mass shootings, on this note, therefore, the highest number of
perpetrators falls within the male category. This is within the period of 1982 and February 2018
and covers the numbers within the United States. There has been only one instance, between
