The Monkey’s Paw
W.W. Jacobs main aim of writing the story is to illustrate the dangers of interfering with
fate. The path with which things are to happen is always predetermined (Bhattacharji 279). Life
should be left to take a natural course instead of trying to curve it to one’s advantage. Jacobs uses
Mr White, a senior man, to illustrate his main theme. When we first meet Mr White, he was playing
chess with his son. The manner in which he relates to his son and wife tell us they are close and
happy. The writer then introduces sergeant major Morris who comes along with the monkey’s
paw, the instrument used by Jacobs to illustrate his theme.
