AN A VIDEO GAME: GOD OF WAR VIDEO GAME
Introduction
The contemporary world has been dominated by technology. Unlike in the past few
decades when kids used to socialize and play with their peers, most children of today spend most
of their free time behind a computer or television playing video games. When they are not at
home or near a large screen, their mobile phones, tablets, or laptops would become a perfect
substitute. The same happens to adults, who also use most of their free time playing video games
if they not on social media. While this is currently happening around the world, only a few
people understand the basics of the video games they enjoy playing at home or from anywhere
using their mobile phones, laptops, or tablets. The design and development of video games takes
a lot of time and resources. The God of War is one of the latest games in the market of video
games. This paper analyzes its development, aesthetic aspects, and cultural influence on the
society.

Overview of the Video game
The Santa Monica Studios developed the God of War video game and then the Sony
Interactive Entertainment published it. The game was then released in April 2018 for PS4
console. It is typically the eighth part of the series of video games by the same title, which are
founded on Greek mythology and slightly linked to the Nose mythology.
The God of War in the ancient Greek known as Kratos is the main protagonist in the
game. Atreus, his young son, acts along Kratos and a protagonist as well (Maiberg). The two
take a journey to spread the ashes of his deceased wife at the peak of the game’s mine realms.
The father maintains a secret about his troubled past to the son. The son is not aware of his
father’s divine nature, which shortly comes to the limelight when they encounter monsters and
gods along the way (Maiberg).

Development of the Game
Ideas and information regard the development of the God of War video game started
towards the end of 2014 when the creative director of Santa Monica Studios confirmed that the
game was in its early stages of development. It was on December 6, 2014 when the director said
the game would be a reboot rather than a prequel (Maiberg). Later in April 2016, Polygon
affirmed that the video game’s concept art of its next installment was leaked. Images of the game
had been leaked to the public. The images depicted Kratos within the Norse mythology world.

This concept had been under the consideration of David Jaffe, the series creator when Kratos had
eliminated all the Greek gods. The next installment was then announced officially at the
Electronic Entertainment Expo. A game play demonstration was done and the concept art was
then confirmed as being true. The video game demo depicted a bearded Kratos and his son.
Kratos was depicted as teaching his son about hunting tactics. In the demo, Kratos and his son
were also shown battling a troll.
The game title was then depicted towards the end of the demo. It was then confirmed that
the video game was being developed for the PS4 (De Meo). The Electronic Entertainment Expo
further confirmed that Barlog was back in the series as the director of the game’s new
installment. He has always been among the key contributors in the series development starting
