Sigmund Freud was an Austrian neurologist who developed the psychoanalytic theory of
personality development that argues, human’s personality is formed through conflicts among
three fundamental structures of the human mind: the Id, ego, and superego (Freud, 2011). He
was a physiologist, a medical doctor and the father of psychoanalysis. He is highly regarded as
one of the most influential and authoritative thinkers of the period in which he lived from May 6,
1856- September 23, 1939. He was also the co-founder of the psychoanalytic school of
psychology. Freud believed and assumed that the unconscious mind governs behavior to a
significant degree than most people can suspect. This theory is mostly used as a clinical method
of treating psychopathology through dialogue between a patient and a psychoanalyst (Caspi,
2005). Psychiatrists apply this Freudian theory in therapeutic processes by trying to make the
unconscious conscious.
Freud psychoanalytic theory has enabled me to understand that the development of
personality from the oral-sensory stage of psycho-social development to old age is shaped by the
interactions between three parts of the mind. There is an internal psychological unconscious
conflict among these three parts of the mind that shapes the human behavior and personality.
According to this model of the psyche, the Id is presented as the primitive and instinctual part of
