1. Compare and contrast behavioural, social-cognitive, and cognitive theories of
development.
Behavioural theories refer to the perspective whereby behaviour and learning are
explained and described in form of stimulus-response relationships. Behavioural theories
assume that behaviour is influenced by the environment, responses and stimuli describe
learning, a behavioural change must be involved to indicate learning, learning results from
the occurrence of response and stimuli together, and humans and animals learn in ways that
are similar (Crain, 2015). Cognitive theories of human development refer to the perspective
whose main focus is based on the manner in which individuals think, remember, perceive,
problem-solve, and speak (Crain, 2015). Social-cognitive theories, on the other hand, may
have begun similar to behavioural theories, but they put their focus on observations which
can be used to clearly understand how and what people learn and the ways in which they can
control their own behaviour.
