Classmate post 1 President Eisenhower’s greatest domestic challenges came from the nuclear arms race between Russia and the birth of the civil rights movement that arose during his presidency. Americans were shocked when Russians, who were seen as less capable, launched an artificial satellite, Sputnik, into Earth’s orbit (Sage 2014). Most Americans in the 1950’s were aware that the government was conducting research on the exploration of space, but they thought it was far into the distant future. Their reaction was a combination of disbelief and panic, which led congress to create NASA and pass additional laws to improve the country’s science and math curriculum (Sage 2014). It began the effort to match the efforts of the Russians. In the South and some parts of the North, racial tensions that had been arising for some time began to re-emerge with the birth of the modern civil rights movement. America, as the superior country, would have a hard time coming down on nations that ruled their citizens harshly while millions of Americans lacked full freedom even still (Sage 2014). Segregation was still a problem and could be used against them in competition among nations. These challenges took on a pervasive role in American society by being catalysts for new innovations, new industry demands, and a desired new way of life. There was a heavy shift of focus to an increase in research and development of new weapons and tools for war. Movies and television were being created for enjoyment of the American people. They had to change the image of their own country if they wanted to be a role model for other countries to follow. Many key civil rights events happened during Eisenhower’s presidency. In 1954, the Supreme Court announced a decision that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. 1955, Emmett Till was lynched in Mississippi and later that year in December Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white woman in compliance with segregation laws. These events help to spark actions and change which have helped to shape the current civil climate. Classmate post 2 President Eisenhower's greatest domestic challenges. The domestic challenge that stands out for General Eisenhower's Administration is the Little Rock Arkansas, Central High School enrollment for African American students. Supreme Court in 1954 had overturned the segregation laws, Governor Faubus was resistant to desegregation and called on the Arkansas National Guard to stop African American students from enrolling into the public school system. September of 1957 President Eisenhower called a meeting with Governor Faubus to discuss the tension in the community(1). It is stated that President Eisenhower felt that Governor Faubus was in agreement after their meeting to allow the students to enroll(1). Tension continued with protesters still blocking and harassing African American students. After 9 African American students slipped in and successfully enrolled a full scale riot erupted, violence was so that the Mayor of Little Rock appealed directly to the President for help. President Eisenhower response was to Federally activated 1,000 troops from the 101st Airborne Division to restore control and order to the community(1). With President Eisenhower's decisive action to protect the citizens, gave fuel to the civil rights movement and helped propel racial tolerance as we stand today.
