You are an organizational development (OD) professional for ABC Company in the role of human resource strategist working across several lines of business. You are responsible to three business-unit vice presidents as well as to the director of human resources in this matrixed organization.

ABC is a mid-sized global company headquartered in the United States and that outsources product manufacturing to facilities in Mexico and Vietnam.

The company’s Board is composed of seven members all located within the United States. The leadership team includes the chief executive officer (CEO), chief financial officer (CF0), and chief operating officer (COO). Both the director of technology and director of human resources report to the COO and are considered members of the leadership team but not in the executive ranks. Vice presidents lead the three primary business units and a director of shared services reports to the COO.

Industry analysts recently released data on the top 10 competitors. ABC was listed at #10 overall, but was listed at #50 on diversity and culture. You know that the industry leader has publicly stated a commitment to diversity and worked to build a company-wide culture of leadership.

Pertinent data related to the low rating included:

Board composition: six men and one woman; all United States (U.S.) citizens residing in the United States

Leadership team composition: four men and one woman; one ethnic minority, all U.S. citizens residing in the United States

Employee demographics: 60% men/40% women; median age 50; management roles 80% men/20% women; 40% of the workforce non-U.S. citizens.

Immediately after the industry data were released, reporters contacted the ABC media relations department to get a statement about the undesirable diversity and culture rating. ABC executives want to better understand how the rating might affect the company’s reputation and impact its market position. The executives contacted the director of human resources to get some answers and likewise, the HR director is bringing you into the discussion.

Directions

The HR Director and other members of the leadership team want to have an “educational session” with the main agenda item being the industry study results and current state of diversity and culture at ABC.You will facilitate the leadership team discussion.

You are to draft a meeting plan for the leadership team to review and provide input. You will also facilitate the review and eventual discussion. Following are elements of the draft meeting plan:

Ten to 12 scholarly sources in addition to any of the course required or recommended readings you decide to use.

A current leadership book of your choosing (this is a book you will choose in Module 1 Portfolio Project Milestone Option 2. See the full description of that assignment in the Module 1 folder.

The purpose of the meeting is to hold an educational session in which the leaders of
the organization come together to learn and discuss about how well or bad the ABC
Company faired as per the analysis provided by the industry study results as well as a
detailed evaluation of the diversity and culture at ABC Company currently.

What topic of discussion will focus be directed to?

The main focus will be to address the low ratings on diversity and culture at ABC
Company that resulted in the company being rated at #50 as well as how the leaders at
the company could mitigate the results or recurrences of the same predicament. Focus
will also be directed towards finding a solution as to how the company may integrate
diversity and culture in a bid to influence the company’s success.

What setting will be used?

To achieve this, the human resources director at ABC Company as well as other
members of the leadership team will combine efforts in discussing the issue and
finding solutions thereof. The board room will be used for the purposes of this
meeting and the underlying discussion and sitting arrangements will follow the
arrangement set out prior to the discussion. All leaders relative to the discussion will
be sited round the table in a concise and consecutive format with the arrangement set
in such a manner that the members present in the meeting are within earshot of the
speaker. For the purposes of this meeting and the discussion therein, the main speaker
will be the director of human resources.

The purpose of this meeting is to provide insight to the executives as to how the low
rating on diversity and culture is detrimental to the stance of the company in the industry
within which it operates. The meeting will also provide necessary insight on how the
reputation of the company may be affected as a result of the low rating. The meeting will
therefore be in the form of an educational session in which the industry study results will be
assessed as well as a discussion that delves into the current state of matters on diversity and
culture at ABC.
Attendees and roles


Chief executive officer (CEO): The CEO leads execution of strategies that focus on
sustaining the company in general while focusing on creating and maintaining value
from shareholders. The CEO is also responsible for the operations and decisions
delving into the implementation of plans. The CEO communicates matters of
relevance to the board on the managements account (Chief Executive Officer, n.d).



Chief financial officer (CF0): A CFO is mandated with the duty of collecting and
reporting all relevant financial information of historical value of the company they
work for. The CFO also makes informed decisions on what investments the company
may make. A CFO also assesses the efficacy of a company as well as offer reports
that aid in making informed decisions based on the CFO’S reports. The CFO reports
to the CEO (Norris, 2017).



Chief operating officer (COO: The COO acts as a second in command. They may
answer to the CEO and have high chances of taking up the role as the CEO in the
event that a CEO is stepping down from the position. The COO keeps the CEO to
date with the operations of the company whilst communicating directly to employees
on policies and strategies. The COO also oversees the management of activities of the
human resource department (Rouse, n.d).

Director of technology: A director of technology is mandated with the duty of
managing infrastructure that is based on technical operations, managing technology
and the IT group in a bid to ensure that the company may achieve goals (Watts, 2017).



Director of human resources: A HR director manages and guides strategies on the
mandate of people in the company. The HR director essence is to develop the culture
of the company through the recruitment process. The HR director reports directly to
the CEO and may be part of the executive board (Changeboard, 2016)



Vice presidents: VP may head and manage the organization as well as the president
can. AVP may represent the company and sign contracts on behalf of the company
(Heathfield, 2016).
