It is particular that Bethlehem Steel had about $1.3 billion of deferred taxes on its balance
sheet in both 1999 and 2000. This reflected a reduction in a valuation allowance of $325-$340
million. With time, that is, in the second quarter of 2001, the company wrote off its entire
amount of deferred taxes that had amounted to $984. The management asserted that the write off
was meant for technical accounting, however, the deferred taxes could be utilized in the future
