and math is the goal of every learner. During early reading, most learners especially English
Language Learners (ELLs) find it difficult to understand some of these concepts. To improve
their literacy development and English proficiency, it is essential to develop learning strategies
among early learners. Although some researchers have concluded that strategies are a stage of
learning, strategies eventually evolve to skills through continued use (Gore, M., & Gore, 2010).
Some of the strategies that have been utilized in learning include;
1. Comprehension strategies
Comprehension strategies are a cognizant set of steps employed by good readers to help
them understand and make sense of the text. This strategy allows students to become focused and
active readers who are in full control of their ability to read and understand comprehension.
These learning strategies help a student to know if they have gained a clear understanding of
what they learn or not. It also helps them to pinpoint what they do not understand and apply
appropriate strategies to solve problems stated in the comprehension (Moskal, Mary Kay, and
To implement comprehension strategies, one should learn to ask questions, visualize,
synthesize information, determine importance, draw inferences, monitor and clarify
understanding. Research has shown that students who apply comprehension strategies before,
during and after reading can link ideas that they learned previously and think critically.
