Aidan Oosterwijk Laurel Springs The Fall of Macbeth Perhaps there is some friendship in covens; the frustration in the meeting of the three witches clearly denotes it. They yearn for a meeting even before they depart from each other. “When shall we three meet again…”one of them asks “…”in thunder lightning or rain?” and the three witches carry on making presumptuous statements as to when they think their next meeting shall be. And alas! While the witches debate about their next meeting King Duncan is just getting word that Banquo and Macbeth have succeeded in defeating two armies from Ireland and Norway. What news this is to the king; he takes pride in his generals with good reason of course. As they fight away with the enemy forces the generals; Macbeth and Banquo they meet with the witches whilst making their way through a moor; a sight to see. The witches are quick to mention how they foresee Macbeth acting as Thane of Cawdor but he would, they said, gradually become king; the king of Scotland. Banquo would sire kings but he would never be in a position to become king himself. Such disheartening bit of information for Banquo, and for anyone else really. And then, they vanish! A skeptical Banquo and his counterpart brush away the information; it does after all hail from the mouth of witches. However, unknown to them King Duncan’s men make their way into meeting the two generals only to accord Macbeth with the title Thane of Cawdor. MACBETH’S NARRATIVE 2! But human nature knows no bounds when it comes to selfishness. Soon Macbeth envisions how the witches prophesy of his becoming king could come true. Excitedly Macbeth writes his lady informing her of the news; but alas, the lady is just as selfish as her husband. She wants King Duncan dead, she wants her husband on the throne and she would influence him into doing it. The plan as they would have it was to get the chamberlains blacked out so they could take the fall for the murder. The murder is not without a portent as prior to the killing Macbeth has a vision about a bloody dagger. Pretentiously, he kills the chamberlains as well the next morning and he assumes the throne thereafter. Donalbain and Malcolm then flee to Ireland and England respectively fearing for their lives following their father’s murder. In truth, a selfish soul has no bounds as soon thereafter fearing for his place at the throne; Macbeth then sends murderers after Banquo and his son over the witches prophesy that Banquo would sire a line of kings. They kill Banquo but fail to kill his son Fleance. Banquo’s distraught ghost visits Macbeth startling him. Macbeth’s kingship following his wife’s malicious advice faces resistance from his subject and his nobles alike. When Macbeth seeks the insight of the witches at this point, he is prompted with more prophecies from demons and spirits; Macduff, a noble Scottish man opposed his accession to the throne is a threat to Macbeth. Upon Macduff’s flee to England, Macbeth seizes Macduff’s castle and orders that his wife and children be killed. Enraged, Macduff vows to avenge his family. Malcolm Duncan’s son who’d fled to England raised an army which Macduff becomes a part of in a bid to revolt against Macbeth’s rule. The plight gains the support of nobles from Scotland who feel threatened by Macbeth actions. MACBETH’S NARRATIVE 3! Lady Macbeth faced with terrors kills herself which plunges Macbeth into desperation and despair. A fearful Macbeth awaits the English, albeit the fact that he believes that he is invincible, only for him to realize that the army was advancing towards Dunsinane. The army had made boughs from wood cut from Birnam Wood and thus, the prophecy to Macbeth was coming true; his demise was nigh. The English are successful; at last, Macbeth is overwhelmed. Enraged, a vengeful Macduff makes a declaration that indeed he was untimely ripped from his mother’s womb and thus, was not a woman born, kills and beheads Macduff. Malcolm then rightfully assumes the throne. A happy kingdom reigns devoid of Macbeth’s ill intents.

succeeded in defeating two armies from Ireland and Norway. What news this is to the king,
who takes great pride in his generals for their remarkable feat.
As they fight away with the enemy forces the generals, Macbeth and Banquo hold
court with the witches whilst making their way through a moor. This is a sight to behold.
