Joint Commission requirement on board membership and voting rights
The Joint Commission is mandated to continuously accredit healthcare organizations
so as to improve the quality and safety of care they provide to members of the public.
Essentially, the Commission supports performance improvement on a continual basis so that
people get the best care. Among many requirements by the Commission, there is a particular
one that suggests that medical staff members that are organized should be eligible for full
membership in hospital boards. The requirement, however, does not define voting rights of
medical staff officers that are on the board. In fact, one can be a voting or nonvoting member
of the board.
The reason for this requirement is that all the members of a healthcare organization
must carry the best interest of the organization at heart. They are supposed to conceive and
pursue the vision and mission of their organization. Thus, they must never pursue their selfinterests. While they not supposed to have voting rights on the board, they surely are obliged
