ASSIGNMENT 1: Family History
The purpose of this assignment is to learn more about your identity and cultural inheritance.
Cultural inheritance is the knowledge, customs, and traditions that are transferred to
members of the group. In this assignment you will trace the cultural history of the group you
consider your family. In tracing this history, you will learn about the contexts surrounding
members of your family and how those contexts may have influenced values and belief
systems.
Objectives of this assignment: after completing this lesson, students should have an
understanding of:
1
2
3
4
One’s own cultural diversity and sense of self;
The historical contexts of members of their family;
How those contexts may have influenced one’s values and beliefs
How individuals from different backgrounds are similar and different
To complete this assignment, you will need to interview a parent, guardian, grandparent or
other senior members of your family to gain knowledge of previous generations of your
family line. The parameters of what you consider your family are up to you to define.
Information from the interviews should include names, birth dates (or estimates),
locations, and interesting facets of family members lives (i.e., occupations, circumstances of
their life, stories you find important). Students should attempt to trace at least 4 previous
generations of the family line (i.e., you, parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, greatgreat-grandparents) if possible. You should conclude your paper reflecting on what your
family history means to you and how you feel it may have shaped who you are including
values and beliefs you hold. Your paper will be shared with members of the class. After
paper’s have been submitted, you will be assigned to read one other classmates paper and
discuss with that person similarities and differences you noticed. The instructor will setup
the methods for you to share and discuss your paper with a classmate.
Write a 600-word (double spaced) paper telling the story of your family history. Your paper
should be organized and be sure to conclude with a reflection.

GRADING FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT
You will not receive full credit on an assignment even if you address all the questions/issues
correctly unless the assignment/exam is truly exceptional in all respects – that is what an A
means. Sometimes students receive a lower grade simply because they were sloppy and did
not proof read their work.
General Guidelines
18-20
Exceptional – paper is appropriate length, paper is succinctly and clearly written
and writing free of grammatical and spelling errors. Paper includes sufficient
information (locations, dates, important events, sufficient generations

identity. Student describes values they possess and explains how those values
may have been influenced by family history
16-17
Very good – paper is appropriate length, clearly written and is free of
grammatical and spelling errors. Organization of paper is good but difficult to
follow a story line. Paper includes sufficient information (locations, dates,
important events, sufficient generations addressed) required. Reflection is
thoughtful.
14-15
Satisfactory – paper is short, includes most information; may ramble or be
somewhat disorganized; grammar and/or spelling errors. Reflection is brief.
