Brocklin Week 5 The FDA, otherwise known as the Food and Drug Administration, is a part of the Department of Health & Human Services and its main purpose is to ensure that the public is protected from hazardous foods, drugs, cosmetics, and medical devices. The organization regulates, inspects, monitors, tests, and develop guidelines for many products that people regularly consume. There have been reports in the past about employees taking bribes from pharmaceutical companies and accepting large lump sums of cash in exchange for distribution of generic drugs. The FDA typically focuses on small companies and for those reasons they’re not as effective as other organizations regarding white collar crimes. The FTC or the Federal Trade Commission is responsible for regulating unfair and deceptive business practices, particularly those that defraud consumers. According to the text, the FTC can initiate proceedings against businesses that have engaged in practices prohibited by the agency’s rules and they can also seek civil penalties and injunctions. Their primary goal is to ensure the consumer is being treated fairly so I would say that the FTC is effective in regulating white collar crime as it deters companies from treating their consumers unfairly. The EPA or Environmental Protection Agency is responsible for setting standards and monitoring practices relating to air quality, water quality, and the disposal of hazardous waste. Many people say that the EPA has not been effective in ensuring the environment is safe but if their role was performed correctly I believe that their organization would be very effective deterring white collar crimes. Companies would invest money in the appropriate equipment and safety measures to avoid putting their employees at risk by cutting corners. Overall, I believe that the resources that are available to these different organizations influence how they work. We sometimes hear in the news how different agencies are getting budget cuts, how funding is lowered because of employee theft, etc. and I feel that all those factors play into how effective those agencies are at regulating the rules when it comes to other companies.
