Choose ONE of the major contemporary perspectives on abnormal behavior including the medical model, psychological model, sociocultural model, and the biopsychosocial model.

  1. Who was/is the main theorists behind the model you have chosen? (For example, Sigmund Freud in the psychological model.) Give some history on this main theorist.
  2. How does the model you have chosen conceptualize abnormal behavior (For example, the medical model conceptualizes abnormal behavior patters, like physical diseases, in terms of clusters of symptoms, called syndromes, which have distinctive causes presumed to have a medical/biological explanation.) Explain.
  3. If you become a researcher or a practicing therapist one day, which major contemporary perspective on abnormal behavior would you align yourself with (or find most helpful in your work to help people?) Explain.

I think the first option is the easiest one, but you can choose any option you like.

Please remember to list all the sources you use.

Thank you so much.

The psychological model of abnormality
This model was advanced by a Greek physician during the second century. Galen used a
patient whose abnormalities were as a result of an inflammation of the uterus or a problem that
she was experiencing but was not willing to talk about it. After detailed testing of the two
hypotheses, he concluded that the patient was suffering from a psychological problem.
The psychological model was later rooted for by a Jean-Martin Charcot- a physician from
France. The physician distinguished hysterical paralysis (without organic cause) from paralysis
neurologically triggered using hypnosis. After hypnotizing his patients, those that had hysterical
paralysis could use their paralyzed body parts. The research was advanced further by his student
Sigmund Feud (1856-1939) from Austria. He believed that traumatic experiences in childhood
are the root cause for mental disorders. Such conditions can be treated using psycho-therapy- by
talking to the patient. Today, psychological models of abnormality are categorized into four main
groups: psychoanalytic, cognitive, behavioral and humanistic models of abnormality.

The psychoanalytic model
According to Sigmund feud (1856-1939), parents play a significant role in influencing
behaviors of their children. Unconscious conflicts, frustration, guilt and other defense
mechanisms that people use to control anxiety affect their behavior. In his view, psychological
problems are as a result of inner conflicts overcoming an individual's standard defenses.
Feud grouped personal aspects into three; the id, the ego and the superego that define
how a person will act. Some elements are self-preserving and of innate nature is called ‘the id' e.
