Perspective of the U.S. Healthcare Delivery

Despite the fact that the United States ranks among the wealthiest nations globally, the
nation is far from the healthiest nations of the world. Unlike other developed nations whose
healthcare delivery systems cover almost every citizen, the United States’ healthcare delivery
system is a unique one in the sense that not all citizens have an automatic health insurance cover.
The system is complex and highly fragmented, with numerous networks of healthcare providers,
insurers, medical suppliers, claims processors, payers, research and educational institutions,
which reduces coordination and efficiency. Since the system is not governed by the basic
principles of a free-market, it is more of an imperfect market controlled by numerous entities,
and has failed in many ways, to deliver the quality of care so described in the many health
reforms (Barr, 2016).

Key Components of Healthcare Delivery

A functional healthcare delivery system encompasses four basic components namely
financing, delivery, payment, and insurance. The financing component is made up of individual
funding, employers, and government. Financing facilitates payment of healthcare services and
obtaining health insurance cover. In private financing programs, employers mostly provide
health insurance while the government acts as the financier for public health insurance programs
(Barr, 2016).

Insurance is a function that deals with the determination of the type of health services
packages that the insured individuals are permitted to receive. In essence, insurance deals with
