Why Is The Black Community Dis-Proportionally Affected By HIV/AIDS?

Introduction

Although African-Americans make only 12% of the United States population, they account for a
disproportionately larger share of HIV diagnoses, at 43%, of people living with HIV, at 43%,
and deaths of people with HIV at 44%, compared to racial and ethnic groups. Among the
population, black women, the youth, and gay men are particularly affected. There are various
challenges that have been cited to contribute to the trend, ranging healthcare disparities,
increased rates of sexually transmitted diseases and less sexual networks, stigma and poverty.
The question of why black people bear the burden of the HIV pandemic has given way to the
problem that the black community has broader concerns for HIV compared to other races. The
present essay will explain the continued and disproportionate impact of HIV epidemic among the
black community. The disproportionate impact of HIV among African-Americans can be
attributed to socioeconomic conditions among the community ranging from poverty, health
disparities, to attitudes regarding the LGBT community.
