H1NMR LAB

Introduction:
NMR or nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is a method used to determine a compound’s
structure. When energy is applied to matter it can be absorbed. NMR explains the energy absorption by
a compound placed in a strong magnetic field. HNMR or proton magnetic resonance is the most
common method used.
METHODS AND MATERIALS:
1. The compound is ethyl benzene with the DBE of 4.
A chemical shift at 7.2 with the integration of 5 means there’s a benzene ring with 5 hydrogens attached
to it. 2 hydrogens have a chemical shift at 2.5 which means they’re attached to an allylic group and 3
hydrogens peak at 1.1 which is simply a methyl.

2.The compound has 6 sets of equivalent hydrogens.
