Milestone Letter of Intent Daniel McAlister SNHU 18/06/18 Daniel McAlister Address: 507 Sandy Lane City, State, Zip: Greenwood SC 29649 Phone: (864)-344-0805 Email: deemcalister1@gmail.com Purdue Pharma LP 201 Tresser Blvd, Stamford, Connecticut 06901 Dear Purdue Pharma, Re: OPIOID ABUSE, OVERDOSE AND TREATEMENT I am writing to voice my concerns over the widespread abuse of opioid in the country and what you as an organization can do about it. The United States has experienced various eras of drug epidemics. There have been times of marijuana and hallucinogens abuse in the peace days. Then society was ambushed by the cocaine party phase. This was followed by the crack cocaine epidemic which is still a low-lying problem. As of now, the society is facing a major opioid problem. A majority of individuals begin by getting narcotic pain medications from doctors to deal with ailments or surgeries. The issue is that most of these people manipulate or pill hop nowadays to fuel their need and eventually end up overdosing on an alarming rate. Between 1999 and 2016, over 350,000 people died just from opioid overdoses according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. On October 2017, President Trump declared the opioid epidemic a public health emergency. This is just in America. Globally it is way worse. Canada and Germany are right behind us. Drugabuse.gov states that between 26.4 million and 36 million people abuse opioids worldwide. Previous attempts have been made to try addressing this issue of opioid addiction. These include attempts such as detox centers and rehabs using other opiates to get people addicted to opiates off them. These are referred to as the Suboxone and Methadone treatment plans. The issue with these are that most only use these to keep from being sick from withdraw symptoms from heroin or other synthetic opioids. Nevertheless if properly monitored it could help wing addicts down off the opiates that they have been using. Use of other drugs has been employed, including Buprenorphine which is supposed to reduce the cravings. As the developers and marketers of the opioid: OxyCotin, I believe you have contributed to this opioid epidemic the country is currently facing through your aggressive sales pitch, lobbying, and by misleading doctors by convincing them to using and thinking it was the solution to a long time chronic pain issue to patients. Your organization should, therefore, play a role in its treatment. The solution I propose is funding, from Purdue Pharma, that will help pay for treatment of patients that have got addicted to opiates. On the other hand, your organization can participate by funding identified non-profit organizations that will scholarship addicts with no financial means to get into treatment. This can be done in addition to getting more intense with the education aspect that you have tried to implement and are already involved with and also maybe bring it to the school levels. Sincerely, Daniel McAlister Critique from my instructor: Hi Daniel, Thanks for you milestone submission, . Overall, I think you have a good foundation for your final project, but there are some areas that - if you expand upon - will really strengthen your submission. Maybe consider choosing one of the 3 main sociological perspectives (conflict, functionalist, or symbolic interactionist) to use as a lens through which you research, analyze, and explain the issue. One good way to start would be doing some simple searches on Google, Google Scholar, and the JSTOR database at the SNHU library online, like "sociology theory drug use", or "symbolic interactionist theory addiction", or whichever theoretical perspective you choose. I would like to see you include some sources (citations/references) from the textbook or other academic/scholarly publications that support your selection of the variables you chose and expand further on the connections you've identified. Please let me know if you have any questions as you move forward on your final project. Sincerely, Jacob Armstrong Approach: Your Analysis: I didn't see where this was covered in your submission. Approach: Limit Biases: Try to expand on the theoretical application and analysis portion of the assignment, and connect some of the key tenets of the theoretical perspective back to your issue. Articulation of Response: Without the additional header information and spacing your paper did not meet the minimum length requirements. SOC 213 Final Project II Guidelines and Rubric Overview The second part (Part II) of the final project for this course is the creation of a letter of intent. The field of sociology presents a unique perspective to viewing the world’s social problems. Social problems tend to be viewed solely as individual constructs and responsibilities, but sociologists take a deeper dive into the complex set of variables driving the development of these problems using various theoretical perspectives. As these problems surface in individual lives, the workplace, and communities, a sociological perspective is valuable for providing a framework for deeper investigation of variables and limiting personal biases when analyzing problems. In this project, you will play the part of a sociologist who has been requested by your national community to craft a letter of intent to the potential funder, the Department of Health and Human Services. The project will be divided into two parts. In the first part, you will prepare to write the letter of intent by conducting research on the social problem and thinking about how to limit your personal biases when later analyzing the social issue. In the second part of the project, the letter of intent, you will analyze the problem from a sociological perspective, outlining the influential variables and the local and global impacts of the problem, and finally suggest a potential solution. The final submission for Part II will occur in Module Seven. In this assignment, you will demonstrate your mastery of the following course outcomes:     Analyze contemporary social problems on local and global scales by applying key theoretical perspectives Analyze social variables and determinants for their influence in the development of contemporary social problems on a local and global scale Suggest potential solutions that are aligned with best practices for addressing the negative impacts of social issues Illustrate how the use of sociological theory limits personal and societal biases in analyzing social problems Part II You have completed your background research and thought about how you will limit your biases in the analysis of the social issue. Now you are ready to write your letter of intent. The potential funder will want to know the local and global impact of the social problem, the variables causing the problem to occur, and your potential solution with justification for why the solution will be successful. Specifically the following critical elements must be addressed: I. Introduction: In this section, you will set the stage for the rest of your letter. Explain the contemporary social problem that you selected and discuss the relevance for today’s society on a local scale. How does the issue present itself in the United States or in your local community? II. Problem Description: Based on the variables and determinants you previously identified when preparing for this letter, determine the most influential social variables and determinants leading to the social problem and justify your selections with research you previously conducted in preparing to write this letter. III. Global Impact: So that the funder can understand the significance of the social problem, you will explain the local and global impacts using a sociological perspective. A. Provide an example of how the social problem manifests itself on a global scale. In what other country or countries does this problem present itself and how? B. Compare and contrast the existence of the problem locally versus globally. How is the way the problem exists locally similar to or different from the way it exists globally? C. Based on your comparison of the local and global manifestations of the social issue, what conclusions can you draw about the influence of globalization on this specific social issue? How similar or different are the social issues and their repercussions, and what does that mean in relation to the impact of globalization? D. Select a key sociological theoretical perspective that best explains why there are similarities and differences in how the social issue presents on a local and global scale, justifying your selection. E. Apply your selected theoretical perspective to explain why there are similarities and differences in how the social issue presents on a local and global scale. IV. Potential Solution A. Based on your previous research, what suggestion do you have for responding to the identified social issue? Specifically what do you suggest as an action in responding to the social issue? B. Explain why your suggestion is likely to be successful, substantiating with research. Explain how the suggestion takes into account your previous research of attempted solutions and identified best practices. Deliverable Final Submission: Letter of Intent In Module Seven, you will submit your final letter of intent. It should be a complete, polished artifact containing all of the critical elements of the final product, listed above (I–IV). It should reflect the incorporation of feedback gained throughout the course. Your final submission will be graded using the Final Product Part II Rubric. Final Product Part II Rubric Guidelines for Submission: Your Letter of Intent must be 2–3 pages in length and use APA formatting. Use double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, and one-inch margins in Microsoft Word. Include at least three scholarly sources cited in APA format. Tutor went the extra mile to help me with this essay. Citations were a bit shaky but I appreciated how well he handled APA styles and how ok he was to change them even though I didnt specify. Got a B+ which is believable and acceptable.
