Question one

Space, which refers to the emptiness surrounding an object, areas between, around and
beneath an object serves importance in the art as it allows for different viewpoints to a particular
piece of art. Positive space, which is the form or object of interest, differs from negative space,
which is basically the remaining part. In most portraits, the positive space serves to give the
portrait or landscape the different meanings and perspective. In the portrait given, “Under a
cloud” by Albert Pinkham, the yacht is sailing in a moonlit night. There is a dark patch forming
which can mean the formation of heavy clouds, and hence rainfall. The space around the yacht is
dark and hazy and has been used to give the information of being night time. The space
surrounding the yacht is also bare and thus relays the information that the yacht could be
stranded at sea. Therefore, through space, the viewer can fill the landscape with his own
imagination.
Question two
The perspective system in a painted landscape adds richness and detail and hence
differentiates it from other flat or banal painting or sketches. It gives a three-dimensional aspect,
which portrays more attributes as it employs the use of space and landscape. The system
manages these additions by the use of space. This use of space can be expanded, that is used
extensively or used partially to bring out the intended message in a landscape. The “Rocky
