Description
For this assessment, you will write a 4–5 page evidence-based proposal to support the need
for a nurse informaticist in an organization who would focus on improving health care outcomes.
Before you complete the detailed instructions in the courseroom, first review the focus of the
new nurse informaticist position you will propose by examining the description below. You will
write your evidence-based proposal to support the need for a new nurse informaticist who would
focus on achieving better patient outcomes through effective communication.
• Achieving Better Patient Outcomes Through Effective Communication:
o Background: Effective communication between healthcare providers and
patients is crucial for patient safety, satisfaction, and overall health outcomes.
o Benefits: Studies have shown that health informatics can help streamline and
improve communication channels that lead to better patient adherence to
treatment plans, reduced hospital readmissions, and improved patient
satisfaction that can be monitors via patient portals, mobile health apps, and
other technologies in facilitating better communication.

Nursing Informaticist in Health Care Organization
This proposal explores the importance of creating a nurse informaticist role in the health
care organization that is currently undergoing several technological changes. As a baccalaureateprepared nurse, I believe that introducing this position in the organization will lead to
streamlining and improving communication among healthcare professionals. This is essential in
enhancing health outcomes by promoting adherence to treatment plans, which is crucial in
improving patient safety and the quality of care. As such, the introduction of the nursing
informatics position in this organization is the right move as it has a significant potential return
on investment.
Nursing Informatics and the Nurse Informaticist
Nursing informatics is a branch of health information technology that combines computer
and information science, and nursing practice. It is a specialty in the science of information used
in managing and communicating knowledge, information, and data in nursing care (American
Nurses Association, 2023). Nursing informatics has emerged as an important component that
supports nurses make informed decisions, thus improving patient outcomes and quality of care.
Understandably, the evolution of nursing informatics is attributed to technological advancements
realized in healthcare over the years. For instance, the development and introduction of mobile
and personal computers in the early 2000s initiated the use of digital devices in accessing pointof-care data and information (Chauvette, 2026). Also, the increasing adoption of advanced
healthcare technologies in the recent past, including electronic health records (EHR) and
telehealth has accelerated the development of nursing informatics.
Nurse informaticists refer to healthcare providers who specialize in using information
systems. They include nurses who utilize data and information generated in healthcare settings to

improve efficiency in decision-making and health outcomes. Some of the common roles of
nursing informatics include clinical informatics nurses who are responsible for optimizing
clinical systems like EHRs (ANA, 2023). They also lead other providers in identifying areas for
process improvement and customizing workflows. Another important role is nursing informatics
specialist, an expert in charge of educating nurses and managing information technology systems
(ANA, 2023). This involves putting mechanisms in place to promote the security and integrity of
patient and healthcare data. On the other hand, informatics nurse consultants are responsible for
selecting clinical systems relevant to the organization and redesigning workflows. They also
provide fundamental knowledge and support in healthcare settings when implementing EHRs
and other health technology systems. Generally, nursing informaticists perform crucial roles
ranging from the incorporation of information, technology, and communications in nursing
practice.
