Description
Students will complete a short essay (750 word minimum) on the Capstone experience. While the particular direction of the essay will be unique to each student, the essay should at least reflect on the stages of writing the Capstone, the triumphs and challenges the student may have experienced along the way, and the impact of learning more about the topic and findings had on not only their research question but also on their own curiosity in exploring that topic.
Grading Checklist (14 points total)
- Includes discussion of your experience going through the writing process (writing drafts, receiving feedback, applying feedback, etc.) (2 pts)
- Includes discussion of at least one triumph and at least one challenge (or something you found challenging, if you did not encounter any major challenges) you experienced during the writing process. (2 pts)
- Includes discussion of how learning more about the topic you chose and your findings contributed to your understanding of the answer to your research question. (2 pts)
- Includes discussion of how learning more about the topic you chose and your findings contributed to your curiosity about the topic you choose and related topics you learned about throughout the research process. (2 pts)
- Includes discussion of the ways in which completing this research can inform your own professional work moving forward. (2 pts)
- The reflection meets the minimum word count (750 words). (The purpose of this criterion is to encourage you to thoroughly explain your ideas.) (2 pts)
- The reflection contains no or minimal mechanical errors. (2 pts)

Reflecting on the journey of writing my Capstone paper, one can conclude that it
was both challenging and fulfilling. Reflecting on the process from formulating the
initial research question to incorporating feedback from others and fine-tuning the
final production of the paper, I learned about synthesis, argumentation, and clarity of
argument. My study was centred on the impact of recruitment practices in college
sports on the social integration and identity formation of students who engage in
sports. This paper illustrates the highs and lows I experienced throughout the writing
process and how they affected both the content and the development of this curiosity.
The Writing Process: Drafting, Feedback, and Revisions
The most challenging yet enlightening part of the Capstone was the writing and
development of my paper utilizing the input and critique from my advisors and
professor. First, my advisor noted that my writing lacked synthesis: my literature
review presented a list of studies rather than an integrated body of literature. That
motivated me to critically evaluate my sources and cement my ideas together more
