(up to 10 points) Research Project—ILS2090 The research project for this course allows the student to explore one facet of the working life through scholarly inquiry and research as well as personal reflection. While rigorous and appropriate research is required, this assignment does not ask for the writing of a research paper. Follow the directions of the research project carefully to ensure maximum success. As this is an ILS course, your research must delve into at least two academic disciplines—history, sociology, psychology, theology, music, art, etc. In addition, your research project must include consideration of at least one literary selection (including video/film) relevant to your research topic. This can be a selection (or selections) covered in our course or a selection or selections beyond our syllabus. Begin by determining a topic and by doing preliminary research to sufficiently narrow that topic. General topic ideas that previous students have engaged with include the following: • • • • • • The changing role of women in the workplace The purpose and meaning of work Unions as an important part of the workforce (or unions as a detriment to the workforce) Discrimination in the workplace (gender, age, race, education, personal attributes, etc.) Safety in the workplace Blue collar vs. white collar jobs and workers You do not need to choose one of these topics. Spend some time brainstorming a topic that will be meaningful to you and that will add to the class’s understanding of the working life when you share your research conclusions at the end of the course. Your research project will be compiled in three written sections; each section should act as a guide to you throughout the research project. Section One of your research project will consist of a 250- to 500-word discussion of your research topic. Be explicit about the topic you have chosen. What question(s) are seeking to answer? Why does this topic interest you? What do you hope to gain from your research? If you are citing from research sources in this section, be sure to use proper in-text citation format, following the current MLA style. Section Two of your research project will consist of an annotated bibliography of solid research sources you have used during your research process. Remember that you must use research from at least two academic disciplines. The literary selection(s) you have chosen must also be included in this section. Use the current MLA style for formatting your bibliography, and follow the guidelines for annotations prescribed in class and listed on our course site. You should include at least four sources on your annotated bibliography. (Remember that “at least” indicates a minimum requirement. Minimal effort generally results in a minimal grade.) Section Three of your research project will consist of a 250- to 500-word discussion of your research results. This section should correlate directly to what you discussed in Section One and should bring your research project to a sensible and scholarly close. You will have the opportunity to discuss your research more in-depth with the class at the end of the term. The written portion of the research project must consist of clearly labeled sections and must be carefully proofread and edited before submission. Use double-spacing and a font size between 10 and 12. Section Two will take the place of a works-cited section. My research project will be the relationship between work–family balance and quality of life. In the modern era, more and more people cannot find the workfamily balance. Also, how to improve the quality of life always let them feel confused. We all must find a comfort level and try to enjoy it. The reason I choose this topic is in my country, most of the causes of family dispute because some family member work too hard and never take care of family. I do not think it was intentional because no one want to have an unhappy family. In the past, there was a big difference between work and life, people believed hard work could provide more chance to let them enjoy life. A broken family had been the end always because people focus on work and miss some problem in the family. The truth was for individuals who invested substantial time in their combined work and family roles, those who spent more time with family than work experienced a higher quality of life than balanced individuals who, in turn, experienced a higher quality of life than those who spent more time on work than family. Everyone has a different opinion about the purpose and mean of work. But, they have the same expectation-hoping the quality of life will become better. My research project will from the three topics of family balance were assessed: time balance (equal time devoted to work and family), involvement balance (equal involvement in work and family), and satisfaction balance (equal satisfaction with work and family).
